Allen Rides Powerplay to Tie Series with 'Bugs

May 1, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

ALLEN, TX - The Allen Americans scored three powerplay goals in a span of just over two minutes to pull ahead for good in a 5-3 defeat of the Bossier-Shreveport in Game 2 of the Berry Conference Finals Sunday at the Allen Event Center. The best-of-seven series is now tied at one game apiece as the ‚¬ËœBugs will have two days to prepare for Game 3 on Wednesday, which will be played in Allen despite technically being one of Bossier-Shreveport's three "home" games in the series.

Jeff Kyrzakos scored two goals for Bossier-Shreveport, the second one bringing the ‚¬ËœBugs within a goal with two minutes remaining. Clay Plume also had a goal and an assist and Travis Clayton chipped in two helpers as the Mudbugs' three-game playoff winning streak came to an end. Allen netted three powerplay goals on four chances in the game, while the ‚¬ËœBugs were 1 for 6.

Clay Plume started the scoring in the first period, jumping into a play just as David Rutherford was released from the penalty box before beating Chris Whitely stick side to put the Mudbugs up 1-0. Allen tied it with just 15 seconds lefts in the period on a nice goal by Nino Musitelli.

Bossier-Shreveport went back on top at 8:10 of the second when Plume centered a pass to Jeff Kyrzakos, who snuck a shot through traffic and past Whitley on a re-direction. Shawn Limpright was then whistled on a double-minor for high sticking, leading to consecutive powerplay goals by Colton Yellow Horn and Dave Bonk on both halves of the four-minute penalty and giving Allen a 3-2 lead. With Nick Layton in the box for tripping less than a minute later, Bruce Graham snuck a shot between John DeCaro's pads to make it 4-2 after two periods.

Working to cut the deficit throughout the third, the ‚¬ËœBugs finally got back within one when Kyrzakos one-timed a Shawn Limpright pass into the net with just over two minutes left in regulation. Yellow Horn added an empty-net goal in the final seconds as the Mudbugs fought to tie the game late to provide the final 5-3 margin.

John DeCaro (6-2) saw his personal three-game win streak end after making 11 saves and was replaced after the Americans' fourth goal by Ryan Munce, who stopped six shots in relief. Chris Whitley (7-3) finished with 27 saves in the win as Bossier-Shreveport outshot Allen 30-21.

The series is set to continue at 7:30 pm Wednesday when the teams meet back at the Allen Event Center for Game 3. Visit the Mudbugs broadcast schedule page for radio broadcast information for the contest, which will also be shown live online on CHL-TV. The ‚¬ËœBugs will then host Games 4 and 5 back at the CenturyTel Center on Friday and Sunday.
