All Five Teams In Contention For Championship Game Berth As United Football League Week 6 Action Kic
October 19, 2010 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Tuesday, October 19, 2010 - The second half of the 2010 United Football League season kicks off on Thursday night in Orlando when former University of Central Florida standout quarterback DAUNTE CULPEPPER returns to his old stomping ground, the Florida Citrus Bowl.
Thursday at 7pm Eastern, Culpepper and the Sacramento Mountain Lions (1-3) will take on the Florida Tuskers (2-2) in a rematch of a thrilling game played in Week 2. At Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, California, four weeks ago, the Mountain Lions rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to deal the Tuskers their first-ever regular-season loss, 24-20.
"Orlando will always have a place my heart," said Culpepper. "I grew up in Ocala and I still have a lot of ties and relationships in the Orlando area. I played my college career there. I feel great to get back home and play in front of a lot of family and friends. It's great to be able to do that."
At Central Florida, Culpepper re-wrote the school's quarterback records, breaking more than 30 career marks. He set an NCAA record for single season completion percentage with 73.6%, breaking a 15-year-old mark set by Hall of Famer Steve Young (BYU). He became one of only three men in NCAA history to top the 10,000-yard passing mark and the 1,000-yard rushing mark in a career. He finished his career ranked sixth on the NCAA's all-time total offense list with 12,459 yards and was responsible for 108 touchdowns (84 passing).
Born in Ocala Culpepper attended Vanguard High School where he played football, basketball and baseball. In 2007 he was named to the FHSAA's All-Century Team, which listed the top 33 football players in the state of Florida's 100-year history of high school football.
Thursday's game is actually a homecoming for a pair of Mountain Lions. While Culpepper played at UCF from 1995 to 1998, offensive coordinator MIKE KRUCZEK comes back after serving as UCF head coach from 1998 to 2003 and the program's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach from 1985 to 1997.
HDNet will have the live broadcast of the game, with Kenny Rice (play-by-play), Paul Maguire (analyst), Ron Kruck and Paul Crane (sideline) bringing the action to a national audience beginning with the pre-game show at 6.30pm Eastern.
Saturday at 12.30pm Pacific (3.30pm Eastern), the tied-for-first-place Las Vegas Locomotives (3-1) look to stay on track for a second straight championship game berth at Sam Boyd Stadium against the visiting Hartford Colonials (1-3). This will be the first meeting of the season between the two franchises, and the first since the Colonials franchise moved from New York to Connecticut.
The Locos are the form team in the UFL, as they come into Saturday's contest on a three-game winning streak. Conversely, the Colonials are heading west looking to snap their three-game losing streak.
Join Craig Minervini (play-by-play), Doug Flutie (analyst), Ryan Nece and Damon Hack (sideline) for the live broadcast of Saturday's key contest on Versus.
The Omaha Nighthawks are tied for first place at 3-1 going into their second bye week of the season.
