All 10 Clubs Take a Pass in Thursday's Waiver Draft
Published on March 4, 2004 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Thursday, March 4, 2004) - All 10 Major League Soccer teams passed on selecting players from the 2004 MLS Waiver Draft, held today via conference call from League headquarters in New York. The Waiver Draft selection order was based on the original order of the 2004 SuperDraft (held on Jan. 16), which takes into consideration each team's record during the 2003 season and how far each club advanced in the 2003 MLS Cup Playoffs.
A total of eight players were available, which included both 2000 U.S. Olympic Team co-captains, defenders Chad McCarty and Brian Dunseth, Honduran National Team defender Milton Reyes, the No. 2 selection in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft Ali Curtis, and the veteran midfielder from the 1998 U.S. World Cup squad Chad Deering. Also released were seven-year MLS defender Ezra Hendrickson, Jose Alegria and Edgar Bartolomeu. These moves were made before the March 1 deadline by which teams were required to be in roster and salary budget compliance.
Since no team claimed a player in the Waiver Draft, the selection order will remain intact for future waiver selections. The current order is as follows: (1) Dallas Burn, (2) Columbus Crew, (3) Los Angeles Galaxy, (4) D.C. United, (5) Colorado Rapids, (6) MetroStars, (7) Kansas City Wizards, (8) New England Revolution, (9) Chicago Fire and (10) San Jose Earthquakes. A team which makes a selection drops to the bottom of the list.
MLS kicks off its ninth season on Saturday, April 3. D.C. United will host the defending champion San Jose Earthquakes at RFK Stadium in a game televised live on ABC (4:00 ET) to kick off a full slate of five Opening Day games.
