Akron Racers News Release
AKRON, OH - The Akron Racers announced today that they have extended the contract of pitcher Alison Owen through the 2016 season. This marks Owen's third season of play with the Racers.
"Alison has gained a lot of experience over the past two seasons about just what it takes to compete at this level," noted Joey Arrietta, GM of the Racers. "There is no substitute for experience and I believe Alison has a better mindset to take on that challenge this coming summer."
Owen went 1-2 with a 4.60 ERA, good for third best on the Racers staff in 2015, but made her mark as a relief pitcher where Owen went 1-0 in seven appearances, throwing 17.1 innings, allowing nine earned runs on 26 hits and three walks while striking out four. Owen's ERA dropped to 3.63 when throwing out of the bullpen. The right-hander worked exclusively out of the bullpen for the first three weeks of the season, making five appearances and dropping her ERA to 2.10 in 13.1 innings of work.
As a rookie in 2014, Owen was arguably the team's best pitcher, leading Akron in ERA (3.48), WHIP (1.44) and winning percentage (.667) in 60.1 innings. Owen pitched more effectively as a starter, taking the circle to begin the game in 11 of her 16 appearances. She also was one of only two pitchers to throw a shutout for the Racers and tossed three complete games in 2014. Owen's first career complete game came on July 5, 2014 in a 4-3 win over Monica Abbott and the Chicago Bandits in eight innings.
Collegiately, Owen split her career between the University of Georgia and Mississippi State. At Mississippi State Owen finished as the program's career leader in strikeouts with 473, fewest walks per seven innings at 1.05 and most strikeouts per seven innings at 8.83 despite only pitching for two years with the Bulldogs.
At Georgia, where Owen began her collegiate career, she guided the Bulldogs with a 15-5 record, a 1.93 ERA and 159 strikeouts as a sophomore. Her final season at Georgia.
