Albany names Gendron head coach

July 16, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

The New Jersey Devils have added Dennis Gendron to their coaching staff by naming him to the position of head coach of their top development team, the American Hockey League's Albany River Rats. Chris Terreri and Geordie Kinnear will continue as the club's assistant coaches.

The announcements were made on Tuesday by River Rats' General Manager Chris Lamoriello.

"'Red' has been with our organization for nine years, and during that time he has demonstrated his abilities as a teacher and motivator," said Lamoriello. "We feel confident that he will bring our hockey team to the next level, while at the same time develop some of our young players in the early stages of their professional careers."

Gendron, 44, a native of Berlin, N.H., becomes the fourth head coach in team history. This marks his first professional hockey head coaching assignment, having served Albany as an assistant coach for four seasons from 1996-2000. Gendron joined the Devils' organization on August 4, 1993 as technological specialist (1993-94), and then as assistant coach (1994-96), where he was primarily involved in the video aspects of coaching hockey. He spent the past two seasons as a member of New Jersey's scouting staff.

Gendron represented the United States as an assistant coach during the 1993, 2001 and 2002 World Junior Championships, and served on the staffs of several U.S. select 16- and 17-year-old teams.

Prior to joining the Devils, Gendron was an assistant coach at the University of Maine for three seasons. During that time, the Black Bears won the 1993 NCAA championship, two Hockey East regular-season championships, and two playoff championships. He also spent nine seasons as head coach at Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, Vt. Gendron received his masters degree in education administration in 1993 from Maine, and is also a graduate of New England College, where he majored in education and social studies.

Dennis and his wife, Janet reside in Clifton Park, N.Y., with their two daughters, 18-year-old Katelyn and 16-year-old Allison.
