Albany Firebirds News Release
Wilkes-Barre, Pa., April 3, 2004 â The Albany Conquest faced an opponent for the first time this preseason in a controlled scrimmage against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers losing, 42-30, Saturday at the Wyoming Valley Sports Dome in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
The Albany Conquest, back-to-back Northeast Division Champions, will open the regular season on the road against the Cape Fear Wildcats on April 10 in Fayetteville, N.C., before returning to the Capital Region for their home opener against the Manchester Wolves on April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pepsi Arena featuring performances by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
"Overall I am pleased with how we did," said Albany Conquest Head Coach Steve Matthews. "On paper we may have lost, but a scrimmage is about working on things and observing players, and I believe we accomplished a lot today. Now we prepare for the real thing next weekend in Fayetteville," added Coach Matthews.
The format of the scrimmage allowed each team to have nine offensive possessions, but did not include any special teams play as part of the scrimmage.
All three quarterbacks at the Conquest's preseason training camp, which ends Monday when the team pairs its roster to 21 players, participated in the scrimmage. Gus Ornstein, in his second season with the Conquest, was 6-of-11 passing for 69 yards and threw for two touchdowns. D Bryant, a rookie from Duke University and invitee to the NFL's 2003 Scouting Combine, completed 7-of-14 passes for 94 yards and tossed one TD pass and one interception. He also rushed for a score on a bootleg. Jake Knott, a rookie from Wabash College (Ind.), finished 7-of-13 passing for 61 yards with one touchdown strike.
Adriel Linyear (WR/LB), Jim Jones (WR/LB), Timothy Perren (FB/LB), and Calvin Ceaser (WR/DB) each were on the receiving end of one touchdown.
The scrimmage was the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers second of their 2004 preseason following a 46-28 victory over the Manchester Wolves on March 28 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
