Alabama Hammers End Season with Win

June 27, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Alabama Hammers News Release

The Alabama Hammers completed the 2014 season of play in the Professional Indoor Football League with a stellar performance by defeating the Harrisburg Stampede 42-24 on the home field at the Von Braun Center. The Hammers end the season at 4-8 after winning the PIFL Championship a year ago.

"We always compete for a championship so this season was certainly disappointing for us," said Dean Cokinos, head coach of the Hammers. "It was good to end the season on a winning note."

The evening started with a bang for the Hammers as quarterback Darnell Kennedy hit Charles McClain on a 29-yard strike and a touchdown on the game's opening play. The entire first quarter was filled with scoring as the Hammers scored on each of its four times it touched the ball while the Stampede scored once on a 3-yard scamper by quarterback E. J. Nemeth.

The Hammers hit pay dirt on a 4-yard Kennedy to Jeremy Grier TD pass, another Kennedy to McClain hookup, this one of 6-yards and a failed field goal attempt by the Stampede returned in spectacular fashion by McClain from 35-yards out. The wild first quarter was led by the Hammers 27-6.

The second and third quarters were both filled with grand defensive play, penalties and fumbles by both squads. Alabama scored its lone touchdown in the second quarter as Kennedy found Mico McSwain on a crossing pattern on an 11-yard strike with 41-seconds remaining before halftime. In the third, Harrisburg (4-8) tallied one score on a Nemeth pass to Collis Martin who somehow fought his way through several would-be Hammers' tacklers. Going into the final stanza, the Hammers had a commanding 33-12 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the Hammers scored on an Armando Cuko 30-yard field goal and a McClain 13-yard end-around scamper. The Stampede found the end zone on a Nemeth to Martin pass of 13-yards and a Nemeth to Scorpio Brown toss of 9-yards.

"It was good to see some success for this squad as we've had some plays go bad and from there it fell apart," added Cokinos. "Good to perform well with a win for our fans."
