Akron Racers News Release
AKRON, OH - When the NPF announced the weekly honors for Week #2 of the season, June 6-12, there was a distinct Rubber City feel. The Akron Racers swept the offensive, pitcher and rookie of the week awards in a week that saw the Racers complete a four-game sweep of their first series of the 2016 campaign.
Racers veteran third baseman Kelley Montalvo won the Offensive Player of the Week award, while rookies Jailyn Ford and Sami Fagan won the Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week awards, respectively.
In four games, Montalvo went 5-8 with a double, one home run, four runs scored and five RBI. Montalvo also walked five times in the week, including one game in which she drew three walks and recorded zero official at bats.
On June 8th, Montalvo scored the game-tying run in the Racers 5-3 come-from-behind victory over the Pennsylvania Rebellion and on June 11th, Montalvo had three consecutive at bats with an RBI in Akron's 12-5 win over the Dallas Charge.
Ford appeared in all four games for the Racers on her way to earning the Rookie of the Week honor. Ford began her career making her first start in the Racers home opener at Firestone Stadium on June 8th. The rookie left-hander was nearly perfect, throwing five shutout innings, only allowing two hits with three strikeouts in her first professional win. The following night, Ford threw the final two innings to pick up her first career save, allowing zero runs and one hit, while striking out four hitters. On June 10th, Ford would again come out of the bullpen, throwing one inning, allowing her first professional run on just one hit. Finally, on Saturday night, Ford made her second start, giving up four hits in five shutout innings with four strikeouts in recording her second win.
All tallied, Ford threw 13 innings of work, allowing one run on eight hits with 11 strikeouts. Most impressive was the fact that Ford didn't walk a single batter in her first week in the NPF.
Fagan's professional career couldn't have started much better grabbing Rookie of the Week honors in her first appearance as Racer. On June 8th, Fagan blasted a home run in the first inning in her first professional at bat. Fagan continued her award-winning performance finishing the week 6-12, with a double, one home run and scoring one run in each of the four games. Fagan also scored the go ahead run in the Racers win over the Rebellion, 10-6.
Akron (5-4) completed its first set of seven home games with a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Bandits. The team travels to Chicago for a three-game series June 17-19, with each game available on NPFTV.
On Monday, June 20 and Tuesday, June 21, the Racers will travel to Dallas to take on the Charge in the first games of the 2016 NPF season on CBS Sports Network. The Racers return home Saturday, June 25 to host the USSSA Florida Pride in a two-game series at Firestone Stadium.
