Akron Pitching Stymies Dawgs Offense in Loss

Conroe, TX (June 15,2017) Just as Akron couldn't do much with the pitching of Monica Abbott last night, the Scrap Yard Dawgs were no match of Akron's Jailyn Ford a day later. Ford allowed just three hits and the Racers offense did the rest in a 6-2 win against the Dawgs on Thursday. The win gives the Racers the series win, its first of the season. The loss drops the Dawgs to 4-4 on the year.
Ford's season debut was a gem, allowing just three hits in the victory. The James Madison product struck out two and walked two in five innings of work.
The Dawgs' anemic offense got on base just seven times all night, its lowest number of the season. Meanwhile the Racers managed to score six runs on just four hits, starting the scoring right away in the top of the first inning. Kristen Wyckoff was hit by a Cheridan Hawkins pitch for the first base runner of the game. Sami Fagan reached when her ground ball was bobbled by the Dawgs infield. The Dawgs defense committed two errors in the game. Wyckoff scored on a Hawkins wild pitch for the 1-0 lead.
Sam Fischer's ground out scored Fagan for the second run of the first inning. But the Racers were just getting started. Jennifer Gilbert's fly ball sailed over the fence in center to up the score to 3-0. The Ball State product is hitting .333 on the year.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Dawgs' Alisa Goler laced a two-out double to right field, but was left stranded after Ford got Jade Rhodes to fly out to left. Goler - the Frankfort, Ill. native - is hitting .353 on the year in seven games for the Dawgs.
It was Wyckoff who helped the Racers extend the lead in the top of the fourth. Griffin Joiner reached on an error charged to Dawgs second baseman Nerissa Myers. Ashley Thomas singled to left to advance pinch runner Megan Greer to second base. Wyckoff then smoked a ball up the middle, good enough for a two-RBI triple. Wyckoff gave the Dawgs pitching fits in the series, going 4-for-8 and driving in four. Fischer's sacrifice fly scored Wyckoff to extend the Racers lead to 6-0.
Hawkins took the loss on the mound for the Dawgs, allowing three unearned runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Sara Plourde tossed four and one-third innings in relief, allowing three runs on three hits. The University Massachusetts product struck out six and walked two. Morgan Foley struck out one and walked one in two scoreless innings of work for the Dawgs.
The Dawgs broke up the shut-out in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kayla Winkfield singled to center to open the inning. Britt Vonk then drove a ball to deep left center for the home run off Akron's Aimee Creger. The two-RBI shot gave Vonk her seventh and eighth RBIs of the season.
The Dawgs finish off its home stand as it hosts the USSA Pride on Friday and Saturday at the Scrap Yard in the Woodlands. First pitch both nights is set for 7:05pm.
