SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Kerrick Cooper threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Miami Valley downed Syracuse in the season opener for both teams Monday night.
Maurice Lee and Dan Fry each scored twice, and Travis Pugh had two interceptions for the Silverbacks.
VIPERS 40, RENEGADES 39
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Gene Davis' 17-yard field goal as time expired lifted the Chattahoochee Valley Vipers to a wild 40-39 victory over the Rome Renegades before 3,877 at the Columbus Civic Center Saturday night.
The Vipers are now 2-0 with a combined margin of victory of three points. Rome fell to 1-1.
The Vipers erased early deficits of 18-6 and 24-14 to set up the stage for a fourth-quarter shootout.
Andrico Hines gave the Vipers a 37-33 lead on a 1-yard run with 58 seconds to go, but the Renegades answered with a Bart Gloyd 17-yarder to Gerald Gales after a 36-yard Gales kickoff return that put the Renegades up 39-37 16 seconds later.
Hines completed first down passes to Garvin Graves and Terrance Samuels to move the Vipers and set up Davis' winning kick. Davis also had a third-quarter field goal.
Graves tied his league single-game reception record - which he co-owns with Quentin Robinson of Johnstown --with 13 catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Hines finished 20 of 36 for 202 yards and those two Graves touchdown while also running for run.
Gloyd threw for 191 yards and four touchdowns for the Renegades.
BANDITS 81, PHANTOMS 40
FLORENCE, S.C. - Redd Thompson caught five touchdowns and a league-record 186 yards as the Richmond Bandits downed the Florence Phantoms 81-40 before 2,833 Saturday night.
Thompson broke his own record of 176 yards set last year against Johnstown.
Robbie Jenkins threw for 334 yards and nine touchdown as the Bandits erased a 26-22 second deficit with two Jenkins to Bryan Still (8 catches for 135 yards) touchdowns in the final 4:01 of the half.
Brandon Isaiah rushed for 84 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Bishlar Penson had an interception for Richmond (1-1), which held Florence (0-1) scoreless in the fourth.
RIVERHAWKS 21, STAMPEDE 14
STEUBENVILLE , Ohio - Using a pair of defensive touchdowns in the second half,the Johnstown Riverhawks opened their 2006 season with a 21-14 win over the Steubenville Stampede on Saturday night at St. John Arena.
The Riverhawks (1-0) used a fumble return by defensive lineman Densville Saunders in the third quarter and a interception return by Dominique Morris in the fourth to overcome a 14-3 deficit late in the first. Johnstown also had a league record tying three field goals from Jason Cherry from 38, 36 and 20 yards to bolster the offense in the lowest scoring game in league history.
Steubenville (0-2) opened its lead in the first on a 19-yard touchdown pass to receiver Thunder Collins and a 3-yard run from Wes Beschorner, who connected with Collins on the earlier score.
After that, the Riverhawks controlled the clock on offense and harassed Beschorner into overthrows, and three interceptions in the final 49 minutes. Carlos Campbell, Morris and Derrell Poland each came down with interceptions for Johnstown, which also sacked Beschorner five times in the contest with David Pisanick and Amos Wilson creating chaos in the Steubenville backfield.
FREEZE 61, LEGENDS 53
ERIE, Pa.--David Dinkins rushed for three touchdowns and threw for three as the Erie Freeze outlasted the Canton Legends 61-53 in front of 3,500 at Tullio Arena.
The Freeze, getting two touchdowns from their defense, led by as many as 20 points before withstanding a rally led by Legends QB Dan Larlham.
A 7-yard Larlham score to Tim Smith made it 54-47 with 52 seconds left.
Dinkins' 11-yard touchdown run put the Freeze up 14, but Larlham found Chris Archie on a 14-yard scoring pass with 28 seconds to go, and the Legends then recovered the ensuing onside kick.
Chris Blackshear's interception secured the victory for the Freeze.
SPARTANS 33, GHOSTRIDERS 24
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Anthony Young threw three touchdown passes and ran for another as the Augusta Spartans' first-ever victory spoiled the home debut of the Carolina Ghostriders, 33-24, before 1,821 at theAsheville Civic Center Friday night.
The Ghostriders (0-2) had a 12-7 second quarter lead on Antoine Calloway's run, but Young connected with Mark Meyers to make it 14-12 to put the Spartans (1-0) back in control. They built their lead to 33-12 at one point.
Marvin Stone scored the Spartans' first points with a 50-yard opening kickoff return.
Jimmy Bell rushed for 92 yards for the Ghostriders, who have now lost 13 consecutive games.
REBELS 65, THUNDER 32
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Lavel Bailey caught three of David Malino's four touchdowns passes and the Raleigh Rebels capitalized on six turnovers to spoil the Daytona Beach Thunder's home opener with a 65-32 American Indoor Football League victory before 2,561 at the Ocean Center Thursday night.
Bailey finished with five catches for 139 yards while Corey Peterson had five catches for 91 yards and a score.
The Rebels (2-0) turned two Thunder (0-2) interceptions into Montrail Pittman and Eddoe Ravenell touchdowns while Daytona Beach also fumbled twice inside the Rebel five-yard line.
Pittman finished with three interceptions.
Travis Wilson threw three touchdowns to Lucas Greene for Daytona Beach, which suffered the loss of wide receiver Robert Bailey early in the second quarter. Bailey had a 50-yard kickoff return in the opening period when the teams were trading scores.
