Brad Smyth scored with 16 seconds left in regulation and Josh Langfeld struck 70 seconds into overtime as Binghamton stole a 3-2 decision from Worcester in Game 1 of their best-of-five series on Thursday night. Second Team AHL All-Star defenseman Brian Pothier added a goal and an assist for the Senators, who look to carry the momentum into Game 2 tonight (7:05 ET).

Peter White's first goal in 20 games was also his second career Calder Cup Playoff overtime goal, and gave Norfolk a 4-3 win over San Antonio in Game 1 last night. The Admirals scored three power play goals in regulation, and Brett McLean and Todd Gill finished with three points each. The teams hit the ice at Scope tonight for Game 2 (7:30 ET, 6:30 CT).

Martin Erat netted his second goal of the game at the 9:43 mark of overtime to give Milwaukee a 4-3 win over Rochester in Game 1 of their qualifying series last night. The Admirals rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, outshooting the Amerks by a 39-21 margin for the game. Erat's game-winner came after Milwaukee had successfully killed off a Rochester power play in OT.

In its first playoff game in two years, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored four times on 26 shots in the first period and cruised to a 5-2 win over Utah in the opener of their qualifying series last night. Tom Kostopoulos, Shane Endicott and Matt Murley led the Penguins with two points apiece. Corey Hirsch finished with 47 saves for the Grizzlies, including a stop of a Konstantin Koltsov penalty shot.

Tyler Moss made 29 saves to lead Manitoba to a 4-1 win in Portland last night, as the the Moose took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series with the Pirates. Pat Kavanagh scored twice in the final 2:17 of the contest to salt away the win for Manitoba, which was the only team to win its qualifying series on the road in 2002. Martin Kariya, younger brother of Anaheim's Paul and Albany's Steve, made his pro debut with Portland out of the University of Maine.

After Wednesday's commanding 3-1 win, Springfield goes for the series sweep tonight in Hartford (7:05 ET). The Wolf Pack are 9-4 all-time when facing elimination, including wins in Games 4 and 5 against the Falcons to take their 2000 conference quarterfinal series. Springfield, looking to claim its first playoff series since 1997, hasn't won consecutive games at the Hartford Civic Center since the 1997-98 season.

FROM CALDER TO STANLEY:

Jean-Sebastien Giguere, a Calder Cup Finalist with Saint John in 1998, stopped 63 shots, an NHL record for a player making his Stanley Cup Playoff debut, as Anaheim knocked off Detroit in triple overtime, 2-1, to win Game 1 of their Western Conference quarterfinal last night. Giguere made 36 of his saves in 43:18 of overtime play.

ON THIS DATE:

1937 – The Syracuse Stars defeated the Philadelphia Ramblers, 5-0, to win the first American Hockey League championship... 1948 – The Cleveland Barons, who finished the regular season with a 27-game unbeaten streak, defeated Buffalo, 6-2, to capture the franchise's fourth Calder Cup... 1985 – Pat Conacher scored 17 seconds into the fourth overtime, giving Nova Scotia a 4-3 win over Maine and ending the fourth-longest game in AHL history.
