GAME NOTES (all times ET):
Game 5 - Hershey at W-B/Scranton, 7:05 (WBS leads, 3-1)
Hershey tries to extend its season again as it travels to Wilkes-Barre for Game 5 of its East Division semifinal series against the Penguins... The Bears avoided a sweep on Wednesday by posting a 3-2 overtime victory at the Giant Center... Alexandre Giroux netted the game-winner just 20 seconds into the extra session after also scoring in the second period... It was Giroux's third OT goal vs. the Penguins over the last two postseasons... Hershey goaltender Frederic Cassivi stopped 32 of 34 shots in the winning effort... Chris Minard scored both Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goals in Game 4, his third and fourth of the series... Tim Brent leads all AHL scorers with seven points (3-4-7) in the playoffs... Of the 107 previous teams in AHL history to fall behind 3-0 in a best-of-seven series, only 12 have managed to force a Game 6, including the Bears in 1992 (vs. Rochester) and 1995 (vs. Cornwall).
Game 5 - Toronto at San Antonio, 8:00 (Series tied, 2-2)
Toronto and San Antonio take the ice for a pivotal Game 5 of their North Division semifinal series tonight at the AT&T Center... The Marlies held on for a 3-2 victory in Game 4 on Wednesday, with a Chris Harrington empty-net goal turning out to be the difference... John Mitchell and Michel Leveille also scored in that victory for Toronto, and Scott Clemmensen earned the win with 34 saves... Steven Goertzen and David Spina scored in Game 4 for the Rampage, with Spina's goal coming on a power play with 8.8 seconds remaining... San Antonio's Brendan Bell leads all scorers in the series with six points (1-5-6), good for a share of first among all AHL defensemen... Bell and Matt Murley (2-2-4) have recorded points in each of the first four games for the Rampage... San Antonio is clicking at a league-best 25.0 percent (6-for-24) on the power play this postseason.
Game 4 - Syracuse at Manitoba, 8:30 (SYR leads, 2-1)
After playing just once since Sunday, Syracuse and Manitoba take the ice tonight for the first of what would be four games in five nights if their North Division semifinal goes the distance... The Crunch hold a 2-1 edge in the series after Tom Sestito's overtime goal gave them a 2-1 win in Game 3 on Tuesday... All three games so far have required overtime; no series in AHL history has ever begun with four OT games... Syracuse captain Zenon Konopka also lit the lamp in Game 3 and now leads all scorers in the series with four points (1-3-4)... The Crunch scored the game's first goal an AHL-high 50 times in the regular season, but Manitoba has struck first in all three games of the series... Moose rookie Michael Grabner has opened the scoring in the last two tilts and is the only player on either side with more than one goal in the series... Even with Tuesday's loss, Manitoba has won 10 of its last 12 first-round home games.
Game 5 - Rockford at Houston, 8:35 (RFD leads, 3-1)
Rockford can advance to the West Division finals with a third straight road victory over Houston as the teams play Game 5 tonight at the Toyota Center... The IceHogs have allowed exactly one goal in each of the first four games, including last night's 2-1 victory... Petri Kontiola and Kris Versteeg scored for Rockford in Game 4, a contest in which all the scoring occurred in the final 7:11... Marco Rosa picked up the only Aeros goal for the second straight contest... IceHogs goaltender Corey Crawford has stopped 100 of 104 shots in his four starts (0.90, .962)... The two teams are a combined 0-for-29 on the power play in the series... The two teams have been tied on the scoreboard for 87.2 percent of the series (232:47 of 266:57), and neither team has led at any intermission through four games... The Aeros are 4-4 all-time when facing elimination from the Calder Cup Playoffs, and haven't won one since Game 7 of the 2003 finals at Hamilton.

LEIGHTON'S GAME ONE YOU HAD TO SEE TO DISBELIEVE
Mark McGuire, Albany Times Union
Sometime after midnight, as Thursday gave way to Friday and a fourth overtime period wound down, a question popped up from one of the reporters on media row. "Does it go to 100?" He was pointing to the scoreboard - specifically, shots on goal. The Philadelphia Phantoms had fired 99 shots on Albany River Rats goalie Mike Leighton in nearly 140 minutes. The Rats countered with 66. The score was tied at 2. Around 12:38 a.m., two seconds shy of two minutes into the fifth OT, the hearty ones saw Leighton stone Kyle Greentree right in front. It was the Phantoms' 100th shot. The scoreboard clicked to 0. Exactly one minute later, 2 minutes, 58 seconds into that fifth 20-minute overtime, Ryan Potulny beat Leighton. Game over.

RIVER RATS LOSE 5OT MARATHON
Phil Janack, Daily Gazette
Ryan Potulny's first goal of the playoffs, 2:58 into the fifth overtime, ended the longest game in American Hockey League history, lifting the Philadelphia Phantoms past the Albany River Rats, 3-2, at the Times Union Center. Potulny scored on the Phantoms' 101st shot of the game, beating Rats goaltender Michael Leighton with a 15-foot wrist shot from the slot and ending the game at 12:39 this morning after 142 minutes and 58 seconds. Leighton finished with an AHL-record 98 saves. "You can't ask any more than what they gave," Rats head coach-GM Tom Rowe said. "You hope you get that break. It's frustrating for those guys in there because they worked so hard. In a game like this, you hate to see anybody lose, but somebody has to. We were hoping it was them."

NO MORNING GLORIES
Pete Dougherty, Albany Times Union
On his team's 101st shot of the game, Ryan Potulny scored 2:58 into the fifth overtime to lift the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 3-2 victory over the Albany River Rats in the longest game in American Hockey League history. The Phantoms took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 series, which returns to Philadelphia for Game 6 on Saturday afternoon. The seventh game, if necessary, is Tuesday night in Philadelphia. The previous longest game ended 14:56 into the fourth overtime, when Hamilton defeated Houston 2-1 on May 30, 2003, in the Calder Cup finals. The previous longest game in Rats history was May 1, 1999, a 3-2 home loss to Hamilton. Chris Ferraro scored the winning goal of that game at 17:55 of the second overtime.

RATS WASTE LEIGHTON'S HEROIC EFFORT
Chris Fitz Gerald, Troy Record
In the longest playoff game in American Hockey League history, Michael Leighton was nearly perfect after regulation in turning in a record-breaking, 98-save performance. But Ryan Potulny scored on a one-timer 2:58 into the fifth overtime to finally solve Leighton and Phantoms goalie Scott Munroe made 65 saves as Philadelphia edged Albany, 3-2 on Thursday in Game 5 of an East Division semifinal series at Times Union Center. "It's definitely tough going in that long of a game and not getting a win, it's definitely disappointing," Leighton said. "But we've got two games left and we've got to try and beat them in their barn now."

GOAL IN 5TH OT ENDS AHL'S LONGEST GAME
Canadian Press
Ryan Potulny scored in the fifth overtime, ending the longest game in American Hockey League history as the Philadelphia Phantoms beat the Albany River Rats 3-2 Thursday night. The game clocked in at 142 minutes, 58 seconds and eclipsed the record of 134 minutes, 56 seconds set in Game 2 of the 2003 Calder Cup finals between the Hamilton Bulldogs and the Houston Aeros. Michael Ryder scored the winner as the Bulldogs escaped with a 2-1 win in a game where Hamilton netminder Ty Conklin and Houston goaltender Johan Holmqvist combined to make 162 saves.

WOLVES STRIKE FAST, PUT AWAY ADMIRALS
Tim Sassone, Daily Herald
The Chicago Wolves had every right to be frustrated by what happened Wednesday in Milwaukee when they outshot the Admirals 37-17 only to lose 2-0. It was a different story Thursday night in Game 5 of the Calder Cup playoffs West Division semifinal. The Wolves got exactly what they needed, a goal by Brett Sterling less than two minutes into the game, and went on to beat Milwaukee 4-1 at Allstate Arena to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Wolves can put away the Admirals by winning Game 6 on Saturday at the Bradley Center.

TOUGH DEFEAT TO TAKE
Dave Boehler, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
If Milwaukee Admirals coach Lane Lambert said his team played one of their worst games in a while after a shutout victory over Chicago on Wednesday, what would he have to say after a 4-1 loss to the Wolves on Thursday? "Let's just put it this way," Lambert said. "I'm disappointed with the way we responded after last night. We need our better players to step up to the plate here and take charge of this series. Right now, we're not getting that." Milwaukee has only one game left to fix things, as Chicago took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven West Division semifinal series. "Our backs are against the wall," Lambert said. "We know that. Any time you're in an elimination game, a do-or-die type of game, it's a real true test of character and resiliency."

AEROS FALTER AGAIN IN DECISIVE THIRD
Andrew J. Ferraro, Houston Chronicle
Rockford wingers Petri Kontiola and Kris Versteeg scored 43 seconds apart in the third period Thursday night putting the 2007-08 Aeros a single loss away from history. As in gone for good. For the fourth time in as many games, the game was tied entering the third period. And for the third time in the best-of-seven series, the Rockford IceHogs made the plays that winning teams make with the game on the line. With a 3-1 lead in the series - a deficit from which no Aeros team has ever recovered - the IceHogs can finish the series in Game 5 Friday at Toyota Center.

ICEHOGS ON VERGE OF CLOSING OPENING SERIES VS. AEROS
Reed Schreck, Rockford Register-Star
Now comes the hardest part. "The toughest game is to close a series," said Rockford IceHogs head coach Mike Haviland, whose team will get that chance tonight against the Houston Aeros. "The fourth win is always the toughest," said IceHogs winger Kris Versteeg. Thursday night's 2-1 victory in Game Four boosted Rockford's first-round series lead to 3-1 in the West Division best-of-seven semifinals. It also assured that there will be at least two more American Hockey League playoff games in the MetroCentre. Rockford just hopes they don't come until round two against either Chicago or Milwaukee. Chicago leads that series 3-2.

BEARS NEED 3 WINS IN 3 DAYS
Tim Leone, Harrisburg Patriot-News
Confronting daunting postseason odds, Bob Woods is trying to simplify the equation for his Hershey Bears. They're heading into another three-in-three weekend. "We've won three games in three nights on a weekend," Bears head coach Woods said Thursday. "That's got to be our mind-set. Guys have to believe there's a strong possibility that it can happen. We have to just treat it that way." Hershey, coming off Wednesday's Game 4 overtime victory, trails 3-1 in its best-of-seven first-round series with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Game 5 is 7:05 p.m. today at Wachovia Arena.

PENGUINS LOOKING TO END SERIES
Jonathan Bombulie, The Citizen's Voice
Not much separates the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre Township from the Giant Center in Hershey. Just 100 miles of asphalt that can be covered in a car in about 90 minutes, if state troopers cooperate. But so far in the East Division semifinals between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Hershey Bears, the arenas have seen very different games. The Giant Center has seen a pair of hard-fought, even contests that were won in overtime. The Wachovia Arena has seen two games that were, for the most part, blowouts in favor of the home team. Can the cheering of a partisan crowd actually have that much effect on a professional athlete?

MANITOBA CAN'T SOLVE GOEHRING
Lindsay Kramer, Syracuse Post-Standard
Crossword puzzles are a favorite time-killer in the Syracuse Crunch locker room. Whenever someone hits a roadblock, the call goes out to goalie Karl Goehring. "He's probably the smartest guy on our team," said defenseman Duvie Westcott. "If anybody has trouble with their crossword puzzle, they ask Butch (Goehring's nickname), and Butch usually gets it." Goehring's grateful teammates owe him for that and a lot more. The Crunch is still playing right now because Goehring is a lot harder to solve than any of those challenges.
