AHL honors quartet for contributions to the league

July 2, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews has announced the 2003-04 recipients of three annual awards for excellence and service to the league. The announcement came at the conclusion of the league's annual Board of Governors meeting on Hilton Head Island, S.C., on Thursday.

Jeff Eisenberg, president of the Manchester Monarchs, has been named the 2003-04 winner of the James C. Hendy Award, given annually to the Executive of the Year in the AHL. Under his direction and leadership, the Monarchs have emerged as one of the premier franchises in minor professional sports, with AHL-leading attendance each of the last two seasons and nationally-recognized community relations efforts throughout New Hampshire. The Monarchs are the top development team for the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.

Jack Kelley and Roy Boe have been honored with the Thomas Ebright Award in recognition of career contributions to the AHL. Kelley, a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame since 1974, has been instrumental during his career in the development of numerous hockey executives, claiming three Calder Cup championships as director of hockey operations for the Adirondack Red Wings and serving as president of the Pittsburgh Penguins and general manager of the Hartford Whalers in the NHL. Boe has been involved with the AHL for over three decades since founding the NHL's New York Islanders; more recently, he has founded and served as team president and governor of both the Worcester IceCats and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Linesman Dan Murphy has been named the recipient of the Michael Condon Memorial Award for outstanding contributions by an on-ice official. Murphy has served the AHL as a top official for the past 24 seasons, continuing the league's long tradition of developing young officials for the future. Murphy has played a major role throughout his career in contributing to the advancement of many of today's NHL on-ice officials who graduated from the AHL ranks.

The James C. Hendy Award is named for the late Jim Hendy, a Hockey Hall of Famer and long-time statistician and historian for the AHL who won four Calder Cups as general manager of the original Cleveland Barons. The Thomas Ebright Award honors Tom Ebright, the former owner and governor of the Baltimore Skipjacks and Portland Pirates who passed away in 1997. The Michael Condon Memorial Award was instituted in 2002 following the sudden passing of veteran linesman Mike Condon.
