AFL to Salute Mothers
Published on May 8, 2003 under Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK â Mother's Day is much more than just family and football for AFL players, coaches and staff. It's also a time for them to get involved and give back to their communities.
The Chicago Rush has teamed up with the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, Y-Me Chicagoland and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to honor breast cancer survivors, and raise money for the fight against breast cancer, at the team's game against the Arizona Rattlers this Sunday (NBC, 3 p.m. ET).
The Rush will donate two complimentary tickets to the game to all breast cancer survivors. Supporters and survivors may also purchase additional tickets at a discounted price. Half of the proceeds from the ticket sales will be divided among the four participating organizations.
During a halftime ceremony honoring all breast cancer survivors, the survivors and their guests (representing the fact that nobody faces breast cancer alone) will join in a parade on the field. In addition, the Rush coaches and staff will wear pink ribbons symbolizing the fight against breast cancer.
The Grand Rapids Rampage will host the "Play for the Cure" as part of their partnership with the local chapter of the Susan B. Komen Foundation in an effort to raise funds and awareness in the battle against breast cancer. Approximately 500 breast cancer survivors will be honored prior to the Rampage's Mother's Day game against the Indiana Firebirds.
The Detroit Fury, in conjunction with internationally acclaimed Palace Executive Chef Mario Etemad, will be hosting a Mother's Day Brunch at The Palace Grille before the team's home game against the Las Vegas Gladiators on Sunday. The Fury is offering a special ticket package for the game, which includes a lower-level reserved ticket to the game and admission to the four-course brunch. Children 12 and under can attend the game and brunch for only $15. All moms in attendance will also receive a complimentary corsage, courtesy of the Fury players.
In Orlando, fans were asked to submit a 50-words-or-less explanation as to why their mothers should be named the Orlando Predators "Mother of the Year." A panel of judges will choose the top entry and the Mother of the Year will receive a gift certificate, which will be presented to the winner at the Predators home game this Friday, May 9. The winning mom will also have her own logo, stats page and photo gallery featured on www.orlandopredators.com.
