AFL I Arena Football League (1987-2008)

AFL has championship connections

January 19, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

The Arena Football League season doesn't kickoff until March 1, but the AFL will be well represented in this week's AFC & NFC Conference Championship games. Is it a coincidence that New Orleans Saints/VooDoo Owner TOM BENSEN has the most former AFL players (five) on his roster?

This won't be the first big game that Chicago Bears WR RASHEID DAVIS is playing in. Davis helped the San Jose SaberCats claim their second ArenaBowl title in three years by breaking up a potential game-winning touchdown pass in the end zone of ArenaBowl XVIII in 2004. Davis, who caught 46 passes for 484 yards, recorded 44 tackles and snagged three interceptions that season, was named to the 2004 AFL All-Ironman Team. The following season, he was voted the SaberCats Most Valuable Player as he hauled in 100 passes for 1,420 yards and 30 touchdowns in only 14 games.

New Orleans Saints Head Coach SEAN PAYTON returns to the city he made his professional football debut in with the AFL's Chicago Bruisers in 1987. Signed as a backup to Bruisers quarterback MIKE HOHENSEE, he then played as a replacement player during the NFL strike for the Chicago Bears. Hohensee, who threw the first touchdown pass in AFL history, is currently the head coach of the ArenaBowl XX Champion Chicago Rush.
