SATURDAY, AUGUST 6
WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PIONEERS 48, Green Bay Blizzard 41 (Attendance: 3,102)
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (10-7) pulled out a late 48-41 victory over the Green Bay Blizzard (9-7) at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza on Saturday night. A Roy Olsen run from nine yards out gave the Pioneers the lead with 43 seconds remaining in the contest. Although the Pioneers didn't recover an onside kick on the next play, the kick did give the Blizzard the ball close to the goalline and four plays later after the Pioneers held the Blizzard out of the endzone the Pioneers had the ball and the win. For the Pioneers, Bryan Snyder threw four touchdowns with two going to Thomie Venisee. Leroy McFadden returned to the team in grand style, catching five passes, rushing for a touchdown and recovering a fumble for a touchdown for the first score of the game. Green Bay's Brent Holmes caught eight passes for 131 yards and four touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton hits the road to play Florida next week.
Louisville Fire 55, MACON KNIGHTS 54 (Attendance: 2,858)
MACON, Geo. - The Louisville Fire (12-5) came back from a 17-point deficit with less than four minutes remaining in the contest to beat the Macon Knights (8-9) 55-54 at the Macon Coliseum. Matt Sauk found Nate Green on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds remaining to give the Fire the win. The Fire got the ball back by recovering an onside kick after a Rob Green touchdown catch just 20 seconds earlier. The Knights had a chance to win the game, but a Sharif Najib 37-yard field goal was missed as the clock ran out. Sauk threw for 294 yards and seven touchdowns on 30-of-42 passing. Rob Mager caught 15 passes, one shy of the af2 postseason record. Macon's Lionel Hayes completed 21-of-31 passes for 257 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed for one touchdown. Louisville faces Manchester next Friday in the Semifinals.
Amarillo Dusters 59, OKLAHOMA CITY YARD DAWGZ 56 (Attendance: 1,967)
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Amarillo Dusters (9-8) came back from a 20-point deficit to defeat the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz (10-7) 59-56 at the Cox Convention Center. The Dusters scored the final 23 points of the game with a Joe Massey safety clinching the contest after a one-yard Julian Reese touchdown run with 29 seconds remaining gave the Dusters a one-point lead. Reese completed 19-of-28 passes for 263 yards and five touchdowns and two touchdown runs. Chavis McCollister caught six passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns. For Oklahoma City, Craig Strickland threw for 248 yards and six touchdowns. Al Hunt rushed for two scores and caught one touchdown. Jarrial Jackson racked up 235 all-purpose yards. Amarillo went three-of-four on fourth down conversions, Oklahoma City failed to complete on their two fourth down tries. The Amarillo Dusters take to the road again to face the top seeded Memphis Xplorers next week.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 7
RIO GRANDE VALLEY DORADOS 56, Quad City Steamwheelers 38 (4,570)
HIDALGO, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Dorados (11-6) earned their first postseason victory in franchise history with a 56-38 victory over the Quad City Steamwheelers (9-8) at the Dodge Arena. For the Dorados, Dwight Counter caught six passes for 172 yards and four touchdowns with three scores of 40 yards or more. For Quad City, Jeff Hewitt recorded 106 yards and one touchdown on eight catches. Jack Walker Jr. caught two touchdown passes. The difference in the game was a 21-0 run by the Dorados that gave them an 18-point first half lead. After a Travis Burns kickoff return for a touchdown just before half cut the Dorados lead to 11, the Dorados needed just two plays to tack on a touchdown to increase the lead to 18 again. The Dorados forced three turnovers in the contest. This was the only game of the weekend to feature an interception. Rio Grande Valley takes on division rival Tulsa next week in the Semifinals.
