Adam Hamari Makes MLB Umpiring Debut
June 26, 2013 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
DURHAM, NC - In 2006, Adam Hamari (pictured) was fresh out of the Jim Evans Academy of Professional Umpiring and working games for the Can-Am League. Last night, at Miller Park in Milwaukee, WI, he manned second base in a game between the Brewers and the Chicago Cubs. It was Hamari's first major league assignment.
When Hamari made his major league debut, he became the second former Can-Am League umpire in two days to work his first major league game. Will Little, who worked Can-Am games in 2007, was at third base in Baltimore on Monday night in his first big league assignment. Hamari and Little are the first two umpires to graduate from working in the Can-Am League to the major leagues.
Hamari, 30, began his umpiring career in the Can-Am League and moved on to the New York Penn League (Short Season A) later in the 2006 season. He then progressed through the minors, working in the Midwest League (A), California League (A), Florida State League (A), Southern League (AA) and Eastern League (AA). In 2011, Hamari received his first AAA assignment, as he began working in the International League. He spent the last two seasons as a full-time International League umpire and is serving in that capacity this year, though he may be called up to work more major league series.
Before receiving his first big league assignment, Hamari had worked other notable games in the minor league ranks. In 2006, he was part of a crew that umpired a 26-inning New York Penn League contest between the Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets) and Oneonta Tigers (Tigers). That game, which lasted six hours and 40 minutes, was the longest game in the league's history. Hamari also worked the New York Penn League's All-Star Game and League Championship Series. Four years later, he called balls and strikes for the MLB All-Star Futures Game in Anaheim.
The Marquette, MI resident made his major league debut with Jeff Kellogg's crew, which included Eric Cooper (third base), Paul Schrieber (first base) and Kellogg (home plate). Hamari wears sleeve number 78 and will work the rest of the three-game Cubs-Brewers series.
