Adam Greenberg to Get One at Bat in Majors

September 27, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, Conn. - Sept. 27, 2012) - Adam Greenberg, a member of the Bridgeport Bluefish from 2008-11, will be making his return to the Major Leagues with the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Adam," said Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. "He is one of the hardest workers I have ever managed and he has persevered through his setback to earn this chance. We are thrilled to see Adam return to the Majors in this fashion and will be cheering him on feverishly during his breakthrough at-bat."

The Marlins will sign Greenberg to a one-day contract to finally accomplish his goal of getting a Major League at-bat. He is set to square off against the New York Mets on Tuesday night in Miami.

"This is a dream come true," said Greenberg. "It's been remarkable to go through so much in the past and then coming back from shoulder surgery in 2009. It shows you anything is possible and to never give up on your dreams. The Bluefish and the Atlantic League have been a tremendous help since they extend the opportunity to keep your career alive. Everyone in the locker room is humble to receive another chance. Players like Lew Ford and I have a second chance to get back to the Majors."

Lew Ford, who played with the Long Island Ducks earlier this season, is currently a member of the Baltimore Orioles squad that is close to securing their first playoff appearance since 1997. Ford received his breakthrough opportunity and now it will be Adam's turn.

The dream will finally come true for the Connecticut native who was drafted in the ninth round of the 2002 draft by the Chicago Cubs and began his professional career in 2002 as a member of Lansing (A, Cubs) of the Midwest League. He worked his way through the Cubs organization until he received his chance to play in the Major Leagues in 2005. He received his first big league plate appearance on July 9, 2005 as a pinch hitter against the Florida Marlins in Miami and was subsequently hit in the head by an errant pitch by Marlins hurler Valerio De Los Santo, which forced Greenberg from the game.

He currently remains one of the only players in Major League history to have at least one plate appearance but never an official at-bat, but that statistic will soon change on Tuesday night as his career will come full-circle as he puts on a Miami Marlins uniform.

Greenberg last played for the 'Fish in 2011, slugging a career-best 10 home runs and batted .259 with 82 runs scored, 27 stolen bases and a team-high 73 walks. He also recorded 12 triples on the year, which moved him past Angel Espada as the all-time Bluefish triples leader with 28 career three-baggers. During that season, Adam also had the chance to face pitcher Valerio De Los Santos for the first time since their Major League showdown. In their only matchup, Greenberg singled off of De Los Santos, who pitched for the Long Island Ducks at the time.

Adam is the fifth former 'Fish to make it back to the Big Leagues. Brady Raggio was the first to return to The Show, pitching for the Diamondbacks in 2003 after starting the season in Bridgeport. Jose Offerman followed by appearing with the Twins, Phillies, and Mets after spending 2003 in the Park City. Jason Simontacchi was next after he spent time with the Nationals in 2007 following a 2006 season with the Bluefish. Wily Mo Pena was the last, splitting time between the Diamondbacks and Mariners in 2011 after appearing with the 'Fish in 2010.

Bluefish fans that get SNY will be able to watch the game live on Tuesday night, which begins at 7:10 p.m. Also, CLICK HERE to watch Adam speak about this great opportunity.
