ABA playoffs start Friday, March 4

Indianapolis, IN. The ABA today announced that the professional basketball league's playoff tournament will begin Friday, March 4th with the first playoff game to be played in Kansas City. The tournament has been modeled after the NCAA Tournament and is a single elimination seeded tournament. Opening round games will be played at the arenas of the top eight teams in the league. Second round games will be played at the arenas of the highest remaining seeds with the finals scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, March 14th and 15th - the location to be announced in midweek.

The Title Sponsor of the ABA Playoff Tournament will be Pit Bull Energy Drink, the league's first national sponsor. The teams will be competing for the Pit Bull Trophy, symbolic of the 2004-2005 ABA Champions. The Long Beach Jam is the defending 2003-2004 ABA Champion and is seeking to defend its title. The schedule for the opening round games is as follows; opponents will be announced Tuesday.

Seeded teams were chosen by several factors including won-loss records, difficulty of schedule, closeness of games, games played. According to Tom Chichester, ABA Director of Officials, "I've had the opportunity to see virtually all of these teams play - and despite the records of some - these teams are very competitive from top to bottom and I wouldn't be surprised to see some upsets."
