ABA names eighth division after Ron Boone
Published on June 27, 2005 under American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, ABA CEO, today announced that the 8th of its ten divisions would be named after "The Ironman," Ron Boone, nicknamed because of the incredible stamina the 6'2" guard displayed in 13 seasons with the ABA and NBA, including an amazing 1,041 consecutive games and a career average of 18 points a game.
Ron was also known as "The Legend," because he has earned a spot in the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame, the Idaho State University Hall of Fame and for his illustrious pro career. Drafted in the eighth-round of the 1968 ABA draft by the Dallas Chapparels, he lit up the scoreboard with smooth jumpers scoring 12,153 points as well as handing out 2569 assists and 3302 rebounds while playing for Dallas, Utah and St. Louis before going to the NBA and playing also for Utah, Kansas City and Los Angeles.
He was a member of the ABA All-Rookie Team in 1968-69, a 2-time member of the ABA All-Pro Team, 4-time ABA All Star, Member of the 1970-71 Utah Stars ABA Championship Team, hit 31 free throws in a row to tie ABA record at the time. In 1980, the "Chief," (a third nickname because of his Native American bloodline), retired as a player without much fanfare, but for those who saw him play in high school, college and the pros, he is remembered as one of the greats to have played the game. The ABA is honored to name a division after Ron Boone. For more information, visit www.abalive.com.
