ABA announces first Iowa expansion team
May 1, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it will have its first expansion team for the upcoming season in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. According to Joe Newman, ABA CEO, "This was very important to us as it provides a center point for one of our central divisions being located within driving distance of Minneapolis, Chicago, Hammond, Central Illinois, Omaha, and St. Louis. And we have an excellent ownership group with both business experience and basketball experience. This is good for a lot of reasons."
The ownership group will be led by Scott Eastin who has 12 years in the hospitality industry in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids/Waterloo market areas. According to Eastin, "We are excited to bring another affordable family friendly venue to Cedar Rapids. The regionalism of the ABA will allow for great fan followings with tremendous rivalries to develop. We have a strong history of supporting sports with the Cedar Rapids Kernels baseball team, an Anaheim Angels Class A farm team and the Cedar Rapids Roughrider's hockey team in the USHL Tier 1. Our new ABA basketball team will fit in well. We plan to announce a press conference shortly and provide more details."

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
