ABA annnounces new overtime rule
June 5, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. Dick Tinkham, ABA Co-Founder, today announced a major rule change for overtimes in the ABA professional basketball league. According to Tinkham, "The ABA is known for innovation starting with the red, white and blue ball and the 3-point shot followed by the exciting 3-D rule and 8-second time lime." Tinkham continued, "Overtimes can be long and boring. They have heretofore been called overtimes after two teams have battled for an entire game only to end in a tie. The challenge was how to produce a winner fairly and effectively as possible - and make every second, every possesion exciting. So, we're introducing 3-10 and Out - a brand new rule."
"Here's the way it works," Tinkham added, "The overtime period will be three (3) minutes in length with NO timeouts. The only way to stop the clock will be a foul. All players will be eligible to play in 3-10 and Out so that the game will be decided by the best players, the players the fans came to see. Each player will be allowed to have 2 fouls in the 3-10 and Out period. After the 4th foul, the fouled player will get 3 foul shots instead of 2, preventing the fouling team from trading 2 shots for a possible 3. If at the end of the three minute period, the score is still tied, it will be the first team to score 10 points that wins - thus 3-10 and Out. Every second, every possession of the overtime will be exciting."
Tinkham was one of the Co-founders of the original ABA, one of the original Co-owners of the Indiana Pacers, and the lead attorney that helped merge the four ABA teams into the NBA in the 70's - and was the inspiration behind the incredible rules that have made ABA basketball high scoring and exciting.
