ABA adds first ever farm league program

November 13, 2008 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release

Louisville, KY. The American Basketball Association (ABA) is happy to announce a return to Louisville, KY. Louisville has been home to some of the ABA's most historical professional basketball teams including the famous Kentucky Colonels with Louis Dampier, Dan Issel, Darrell Carrier and others. However, this time around, the community will see the ABA in a much different format.

Starting play in February, 2009, will be the Louisville Basketball League (LBL). The LBL will be the ABA's first and only official farm league. For several seasons, there have been community leagues indirectly sponsored by the ABA, but the LBL is the first that will be directly a part of the ABA family.

Chuck Rowe, LBL Commissioner, is thrilled to get this program off the ground. He boasts that players from the LBL will play in a highly competitive format and will be scouted by local ABA teams from Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Indiana. LBL player stats will be passed on to ABA offices and players will have the chance to earn roster spots on ABA teams.

ABA teams will also have the option of letting players take part in the LBL for additional work or injury rehab. And instead of cutting fringe players after tryouts, ABA teams may now send those players to the LBL for a closer look.

Joe Newman, ABA CEO, explained, "This is just another great way to bring the ABA into the lives of those in our communities. The LBL will provide fans with an opportunity to see excellent basketball at affordable prices (key to the ABA), and it will give many more players a chance to live their dreams to play and will provide the ABA with a great resource of players. We are very pleased that Chuck was able to put this together and it is very fitting that our first farm league is located in a city with so much ABA heritage."

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
