SAN ANGELO â The San Angelo Saints today are proud to announce that their week-long Name the Mascot Contest has concluded and the team's new Saint Bernard mascot has been named "Halo."
"We really had a good time with this one," said Saints President Jim Cook. "It was a lot less stressful to name the mascot than it was to name the team and we think we've chosen a name that not only fits with our team, but will also be something our fans of all ages can get behind."
In all, the team received 222 entries for the contest consisting of 160 different names. Pam Blair of San Angelo was drawn from the entries that submitted the name "Halo" and as the winner of the contest will receive two free Saints season tickets for the 2003-04 season. Billye Hill, Kirby Poss and Albert Flores of San Angelo, and Susan Meza of Miles also entered that name and as runners-up in the contest will each receive two free tickets to the Saints' home opener on October 18 at the San Angelo Coliseum.
"We'd like to thank everyone who submitted names for the contest," added Cook. "We have some very creative fans out there and it was gratifying to get such a good response from people in San Angelo, the surrounding areas and even as far away as Alberta, Canada."
Halo has already made appearances at West Central Wireless/Net (the official sponsors), the Tom Green County library, Kid's Kingdom Park and Shannon Hospital. This week he will be at the TGC library (Wednesday), Shannon Hospital's Pediatrics Ward (Thursday) and the Ballinger Tractor Pull (Saturday).
