DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. - It didn't take long for forward Ãlvaro SaborÃo to open his scoring account for Real Salt Lake, as the Costa Rican international came off the bench and notched the lone goal in the 56th minute of RSL's 1-0 win over Toronto FC at Blackbaud Stadium. The result closed the Utah side's run in the seventh annual Carolina Challenge Cup with back-to-back wins, but its 2-1-0 record in the tournament was only enough to finish in second-place behind D.C. United, which clinched an undefeated run to the title thanks to a 2-0 victory over the tournament host Charleston Battery in today's nightcap.
The first half would see Toronto FC come out with the better of the play in the first 10 minutes, followed by RSL dominating the following quarter-hour before the teams evened out the chances in the final third of the half. Real Salt Lake's best chance of the stanza came through captain Kyle Beckerman, whose 35-yard blast in the 41st minute was parried away by a diving Stefan Frei before glancing off the right post and out for a corner kick.
As he did in his first appearance for Real Salt Lake last Wednesday night against the Battery, SaborÃo would enter off the bench, and it would take only 11 minutes in his second go-around to hit paydirt. The striker waited in the danger area for MF Javier Morales' corner kick to drop, and when the deflected ball fell to his feet he knew what to do with it, slotting it home from the doorstep in heavy traffic to give RSL the 1-0 lead. From there the Utahns were content to hold possession and hold on for the win, which was an easy task for the most part as Toronto would rarely create quality chances against an RSL eleven that was on the same page defensively. That resulted in RSL's first shutout of the tournament, collected by newly-promoted #2 netminder Kyle Reynish.
