Gems Release 2012 Schedule

KLAMATH FALLS, OR - The Klamath Falls Gems today announced the release of the team's 2012 West Coast League and non-league schedule. The Gems will play 54 WCL games and add seven non-league games for the team's second season, including day games on Father's Day and July 4, 2012. The 61-game season is one more game than the team played in its inaugural 2011 campaign.
The Gems open the season with the WCL West division rival Bend Elks on June 1, and complete the 2012 season with a six-game home stand against Bend and the 2011 WCL Champion Corvallis Knights.
Highlights of the schedule include:
- 1:05 p.m. day games on June 17 (Father's Day) and July 4.
- "Break the Record Night," scheduled for Friday, July 13, where the Gems plan to shatter the West Coast League single-game attendance record. The existing record was set by the Gems on July 22, 2011, with a 4,156 paid attendance.
- The Gems will continue the tradition of Friday night giveaways and Saturday night Legacy Furniture recliner raffles. In 2011, the recliner raffle raised nearly $3,000 to feed the hungry of the Klamath Basin.
- Every Wednesday will be the team's KLAD Family Value Nights, with $2 pavilion tickets, $2 beer, Pepsi products, hot dogs and nachos. Seven Wednesday games are scheduled for the 2012 season.
- The 2012 West Coast League All-Star Game, scheduled for July 24 in Walla Walla.
Planned additions for the 2012 season include "All-You-Can-Eat" group picnic areas for companies and other groups, the expansion of the Gems' birthday party program, and a "Tater's Tots" Kid's Club. Other promotional additions will be announced as they are finalized.
"One of the best days of any off-season is when the next season's schedule is completed, and it's no different today," Gems General Manager Chuck Heeman said. "A great thing about this schedule is that there are a couple of dates where day games fit right in. We've had a number of fans ask for a couple of traditional day games, and what better dates to have them than Father's Day and the Fourth of July? Now we can get to work slotting our promotions, booking group and birthday parties, and start promoting the upcoming season. We've done a lot of work improving our on-field product, and getting the schedule lets us really dig in to improve our off-the-field production. We can't wait for June 1 to arrive."
The Gems are members of the West Coast League, a nine-team professional style wood-bat summer college league. The WCL features pro prospects from major conferences across the country. More than 130 WCL alums are playing affiliated professional baseball this season, and more than 15 ex-WCL stars played in the Major Leagues this season.
