Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - For the second straight season, the Lancaster JetHawks took an early Opening Day lead against the High Desert Mavericks. However, also for the second straight season, it was the Mavericks who came out on top in the end. The Mavs pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away and open the season with a 9-3 win.
Lancaster opened the scoring in the second inning by taking advantage of High Desert mistakes. Highly touted Mariners prospect and starting pitcher Michael Pineda surrendered a single to Brian Pellegrini before hitting David Flores and Eric Taylor. A botched double play allowed two runs to score and put the JetHawks ahead.
The lead did not last long. The Mavericks scored twice in their at bat in the second inning, tying the game on a home run by third year High Desert catcher Travis Scott. They took the lead on a two-run homer by Edilio Colina in the third inning and extended the lead when they struck for four more runs in the fifth.
The JetHawks reached at least one runner in eight of the nine innings, but struggled to push those runners across the plate. Lancaster stranded eleven runners on base. Eric Taylor reached base all four at bats for the JetHawks, singling, drawing a walk, and getting hit twice. J.B Shuck had a pair of base hits and drew a walk while Jason Castro had Lancaster's lone extra-base hit, a double in the ninth.
The series continues Friday night when the JetHawks travel to Adelanto to take on the High Desert Mavericks. Jose Duran will start for Lancaster while High Desert counters with Juan Ramirez. The first pitch will be at 7:05 PM. The radio broadcast on Magic 1340 AM will kick off with the JetHawks Pre-Game show at 6:50.
The JetHawks will return to Lancaster for the home opener Monday, April 13. Tickets for the Opening Night Extravaganza that include an All-You-Can-Eat buffet dinner are just $10. Great ticket packages are on sale now and may be ordered by calling (661) 726-5400. For more information, please visit the JetHawks official website www.JetHawks.com.
