Smokies announce new affiliation

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.- The Tennessee Smokies announced Thursday that they have signed a two year player development contract with the Chicago Cubs, ending their two year relationship with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"I can honestly say this is a land mark day for the Tennessee Smokies Franchise", states Smokies General Manager Brian Cox. "We are very appreciative of the confidence the entire Cubs Organization has shown us by wanting to partner with us". "The fans of East Tennessee with have an opportunity to see some of the best major league prospects the Cubs have to offer in the coming years and our fans will have an even better opportunity to see them play in the Major Leagues."

The Chicago Cubs often receive national television exposure and that will allow Smokies fans to be given the opportunity to better follow their parent club. "The Cubs fan base is nationwide and is very strong in East Tennessee and we look forward to providing a look at the Cubs of tomorrow for our fans and Cubs fans alike" added Cox.

Representing the Cubs organization at the press conference was Oneri Fleita, the Cubs Director of Player Development and Latin American Operations. "The Chicago Cubs are honored to be part of a first class organization like the one here in the East Tennessee Community" stated Fleita. "We look forward to a long affiliation with the Tennessee Smokies".

The Smokies home opener is April 11th, 2007 vs. the Huntsville Stars.
