Huntsville Channel Cats News Release
HUNTSVILLE, AL â The South East Hockey League announced today that Huntsville Channel Cats goaltender, Matt Carmichael, has been named the league's Goaltender of the Year. The Ottawa, Ontario native was chosen by a vote of the league's head coaches, team front office personnel, and media representatives from each of the four league cities.
"Matt's stats speak for themselves," Channel Cats head coach, John Gibson, said. "We knew he would be an iron horse this season. He logged a lot of ice time and we are looking for that to continue in the playoffs."
Carmichael, 26, from Ottawa, Ontario is playing his eighth year professionally and his third in Huntsville; having played for the CHL Channel Cats & Tornado in 1999/00 and 2000/01. Matt was the "iron man" of all SEHL goaltenders, appearing in 45 regular season games for the âCats. He posted a save percentage of 92.2% and led all the SEHL goaltenders in the following categories:
Games: 45
Wins: 32
Minutes Played: 2626
Saves: 1414
Shutouts: 3
Shootout Wins: 3
Goals Against Average: 2.74
"It's really an honor," Carmichael said. "The guys in front of me have played well all season. They have made my job a lot easier. I have to give a lot of the credit to them."
Carmichael joins Allan Carr, James Patterson and Coach Gibson in receiving post-season awards from the league. Gibson was named SEHL Coach of the Year last Wednesday, Patterson was named Most Valuable Player on Thursday and Carr was named Rookie of the Year on Monday. All three players were named to the SEHL All-Star team.
