Patriots sweep twin-bill from Bluefish to win series

Fields Extends Hitting Streak

Bridgeport, CT - The Bridgeport Bluefish (10-10) were defeated by the Somerset Patriots (14-6) in both games of a single-admission doubleheader at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday afternoon, losing the opener 4-3 in eight innings and falling 9-1 in the nightcap. The Bluefish now embark on an eight-game road trip beginning tomorrow night against the York Revolution at PeoplesBank Park.

In Game One, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cory Riordan collected a no-decision, allowing three runs in seven innings of work, striking out a team-high ten batters. Somerset Starting Pitcher Aaron Laffey also did not factor in the game's final outcome, surrendering two runs on five hits in five and one-third innings pitched, striking out four. Down to their final out, Jose Cuevas laced a game-tying RBI single to left field off the eventual winning pitcher Ryan Kelly (1-0), plating Luis Hernandez to make it 3-3. Somerset answered right back in the top of the eighth against losing pitcher Frank DiJiulio, Jr. (0-3) on a run-scoring double by Adam Donachie, putting the Patriots back on top 4-3.Ronnie Shaban faced the minimum in the home half of the ninth despite allowing a leadoff walk to Jonathan Galvez to notch his first save of the season. Seven different Bluefish batters each had one hit in the ballgame.

In Game Two, Somerset would go to work early and often against Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo (2-1), scoring five runs on seven hits in the first three innings to take a 5-0 advantage. The visitors would tack on three more runs against Albaladejo in the top of the fifth on four more hits to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Albaladejo gave up eight runs on 11 hits (both season-highs) in five innings of work, striking out five. Patriots Starting Pitcher and former Bluefish David Kubiak (1-2) did the rest against his old ballclub, tossing five scoreless innings, striking out six en route to his first win of the season. Galvez and Daniel Fields led the way for Bridgeport offensively with a pair of hits each, with Fields extending his hitting streak to a season-best seven consecutive games.

Bridgeport returns home to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday, May 19th when they welcome in the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs for a three-game weekend series. Celebrate Bluefish all-time hits leader Luis Lopez, as the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Luis Lopez figurine, as voted by the Bluefish faithful. First pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M.
