Yuma Scorpions News Release

(Yuma, AZ) – Nearly forty players gave their best shot this past weekend at the two-day Yuma Scorpions' local player tryouts. Thirty players showed up on the first day of tryouts-which were held at the home of the Scorpions-Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma. Several came to the tryouts from as far away as the east coast, while an overwhelming majority came from California. However, there were six on the first day that had a distinct local flavor-including former Yuma Criminal, AWC Matador, and IVC Arab pitcher Jason Anderson, current Yuma resident and former Yuma Bullfrog third baseman Henry Calderon, and current AWC Matadors' outfielder Gary Snyder. "I'm so pleased with the turnout today," said Scorpions' Manager Benny Castillo. "30 was the perfect number-not too large and not too small. We were able to do a lot of things to give every player a chance to show what they can do as individuals, and what they could do as teammates. We didn't have to make any cuts before our intrasquad game, and everyone participated. There was a lot of talent out there on the field."

Day two of the tryouts was a much smaller gathering as ten players came to Joe Orduno Park in San Luis to take part. But this gathering had a much stronger local flavor as eight of the ten participants were from the area, including Cibola alum and current AWC pitcher James Kuzniak, Kofa alums Carlos Solano and Gerardo Juvera, and current IVC Arab pitcher Mike Miller. Calderon and Snyder attended both days of tryouts. "It's hard to get motivated when you don't even have enough players to fill all the positions," remarked Castillo after Sunday's tryout. "But although the player numbers were low, the enthusiasm and the energy was very high today. We've only got a couple of spots open for these guys, but just about all of these players showed that they have what it takes it to make into pro baseball at some point." Castillo added that those that make the cut from this weekend's tryouts will be notified within two weeks and invited back for spring training-which begins May 10th at Desert Sun Stadium. Those who came just to watch the tryouts also got a sneak peek at several current members of the Scorpions that will be in uniform when the Scorpions start spring training. Helping conduct the tryouts were Scorpions' Pitching Coach (and player) Rusty Meacham, Scorpions' starting 2nd baseman Matt Brunson, and Scorpions' pitchers Joe Davenport, Dustin Kupper, ,Dane DeLaRosa, and (Cibola High alum) David Cuen. Also helping out was Obregon Yaquis' scout Antonio Villaescusa.
