Washington Kastles News Release

The Washington Kastles will be playing in front of their home fans when they attempt to tie and set the record for the longest winning streak ever by a major U.S. pro sports team.

With 32 straight victories, the Kastles have already surpassed the best streaks in NFL, MLB, NHL, WNBA and MLS history. The 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers won 33 straight NBA games, but that mark is in jeopardy this July.

Coming off back-to-back perfect seasons and Mylan World TeamTennis Championships, the Kastles start their title defense at home against the New York Sportimes on Monday, July 8. Washington has won eight consecutive matches against its Eastern Conference rival New York, including three that ended in Supertiebreakers and saw the Kastles save a total of 10 match points.

Last season, four-time Olympic gold medalist Venus Williams led the Kastles past the Sportimes with a heroic effort against former World No. 1 Martina Hingis. Williams rallied the Kastles back from a 19-13 deficit in the final set by winning eight of nine games and fighting off four match points.

Washington coach Murphy Jensen will have Williams back in his lineup for a potential record-setting home match against the Boston Lobsters on Tuesday, July 9. Should the Kastles beat both the Sportimes and Lobsters, they will run their winning streak past the Lakers and into the history books.

The Kastles haven't lost a match since falling 24-15 to Boston on July 22, 2010, knocking off the Lobsters five times along the way. Washington is also 10-0 all-time when Williams is in the lineup, including a 20-11 rout of Boston last season with First Lady Michelle Obama in the capacity Kastles Stadium crowd.

Williams will travel with her teammates to take on the Texas Wild -- formerly the Kansas City Explorers -- in Washington's first away match on Wednesday, July 10.

The Kastles are scheduled to make a quick trip back to DC for a much-anticipated match against Andy Roddick and the Springfield Lasers on Thursday, July 11.

The former World No. 1 Roddick remains a major threat after leaving the ATP World Tour last summer. Roddick shocked World No. 3 Andy Murray 6-2, 6-3 at the Miami Tennis Cup in December, less than four months after the Brit won the US Open and Olympic gold medal.

The Kastles' showdown with Springfield is one of at least three matches in which Washington will encounter a marquee player. In the road trip that follows, Washington meets the Sacramento Capitals led by former World No. 7 Mardy Fish on July 13 and the Philadelphia Freedoms led by 2013 Australian Open semifinalist Sloane Stephens on July 16.

Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict, Stephens will not be representing the Freedoms in DC as originally announced.

Washington caps the second half of its season with six matches in as many days, including all-important conference matches at home against New York on July 20, Philadelphia on July 22 and Boston on July 24 in the regular season finale.

The Eastern Conference and Western Conference teams that finish the regular season with the best records will host Mylan WTT Conference Championship matches on July 25, with the Eastern Conference champion going on to host the Mylan WTT Finals on July 28. That means that the Kastles could play a total of nine matches on the Southwest Waterfront this summer.

Stay tuned to your inbox for more information on individual match tickets, which will go on sale during the spring. In the meantime, season tickets are now available to see the streaking Kastles play for their fourth Mylan WTT title since 2009.

For as little as $150, you could have the first choice of seats to all seven Kastles home matches during the 2013 regular season, along with a package of perks exclusive for season ticket holders.
