Published on November 27, 2008 under Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
The 2008 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge concludes on Thursday night with Team WHL hosting the Russian Selects for Game 6 of the six-game series in Prince Albert, SK.
Thursday day's contest between Team WHL and the Russian Selects can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet (6:00pm MST, 7:00pm PST).
Team WHL skated to a 5-0 shutout victory over the Russian Selects in Game 5 of the series on Wednesday night in Swift Current, SK, improving the CHL to 4-1 versus Russia through five games of the series. The Russians split two games versus the QMJHL to open the series before dropping two games to Team OHL.
Wednesday night's win showcased Team WHL's potent power play, which connected for four goals on eight chances in the contest. Regina's Jordan Eberle scored a pair of power play goals and added an assist to pace Team WHL's victory.
"We have to be prepared (for tonight)," said Eberle, whose team outshot the Russians 40-16 in Wednesday's contest. "We know they're not going to be happy about the way things went, and they'll be ready to go tonight."
Team WHL head coach Willie Desjardins said he was please with his group's effort in Wednesday's win, but also knows they can't take their opponents too lightly in the series finale Thursday night in Prince Albert.
"I think they started making adjustments as (last night's) game, and they'll continue to adjust to our game," said Desjardins. "It's the last game of the series tonight, and we'll need to be ready because I expect them to come at us hard...they'll want to finish up with a win."
Team WHL's victory on Wednesday gave them a 12-1 all-time record versus the Russian Selects in the six-year history of the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge. The CHL now holds a 27-6 all-time record versus the Russians in the event's history.
ADT Canada-Russia Challenge notes...Team WHL will boast five new players in Thursday night's roster. Kootenay Ice F Dustin Sylvester, Prince Albert Raiders F Dustin Cameron, Moose Jaw Warriors F Joel Broda, Saskatoon Blades F Derek Hulak and Swift Current Broncos D Eric Doyle will all suit up in Thursday's contest.
