2007 WNBA Draft Lottery approaching

October 23, 2006 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Chicago Sky News Release

The 2007 WNBA Draft Lottery will take place on Thursday, October 26th from 12:30 p.m. to 12:50 p.m., and will determine the order of team picks for the 2007 WNBA Rookie Draft, which will be held on April 4, 2007. The Chicago Sky has the best statistical chance of winning the first overall draft pick.

The lottery includes the six teams that did not qualify for the 2006 WNBA Playoffs: Chicago, Minnesota, Charlotte, New York, San Antonio and Phoenix. The lottery establishes the order of selection for the first round of the draft, with the order of selection for the second and third rounds based on each team's finish during the 2006 regular season.

The Chicago Sky, who finished 5-29, has 410 chances out of 1,000 to receive the first overall selection, giving them an advantage over next highest-ranked teams Minnesota (256/1000) and Charlotte (129/1000). However, only once in the previous five WNBA draft lotteries has the team with the worst record won the No. 1 pick - the Mercury in 2004 when they selected Diana Taurasi.

In the second round, the Sky will select 8th and 9th. The 8th pick was acquired from Seattle in exchange for former Sky center Ashley Robinson. In May of 2006, the Sky sent the first pick of the second round to the Houston Comets in exchange for forward Liz Shimek. As a result of the trade, the Sky will pick 9th in the second round.

The Draft Lottery will be conducted by WNBA officials and representatives from the accounting firm of Ernst & Young at the WNBA Headquarters on Fifth Avenue in New York.
