2006 NBA D-League draft set for November 2

GREENVILLE, S.C., October 25, 2006 - The 2006 NBA Development League Draft is scheduled for Thursday, November 2 at 9 p.m. ET. The draft will consist of 10 rounds and will be covered live by NBA TV, NBA Radio on SIRIUS Channel 127 and D-LEAGUE.com.

The sixth annual draft will be conducted via conference call from D-League draft headquarters at the NBA TV studios and at locations in each of the 12 D-League cities.

NBA TV coverage begins at 8:30 p.m. ET with a pre-draft show hosted by Rick Kamla designed to preview the selection process and to bring fans up to speed on the latest D-League news. The D-League's new basketball featuring Spalding's Cross TraxxionTM technology will also be unveiled during the preview show.

Draft coverage continues on NBA TV and begins on NBA Radio on SIRIUS Satellite Radio (Channel 127) and on D-LEAGUE.com with the start of the draft at 9 p.m. ET. NBA director of scouting Marty Blake, along with assistant director of scouting Ryan Blake, will team up with Kamla and D-League vice president of basketball operations Chris Alpert to offer commentary throughout the event.

The Anaheim Arsenal secured the first overall selection through a lottery conducted at the annual coaches meeting in Dallas on October 2. The Sioux Falls Skyforce will have the second overall pick, followed by the Colorado 14ers, Fort Worth Flyers, Dakota Wizards, Arkansas RimRockers, Los Angeles D-Fenders, Tulsa 66ers, Idaho Stampede, Austin Toros, Bakersfield Jam and Albuquerque Thunderbirds.

Since the draft is serpentine, or "snaked", the order will be reversed in each of the 10 rounds. For example, after picking first, Anaheim's next selections will be the 24th and 25th overall. Albuquerque will select last in the first round, but first in the second round, giving the T-Birds the 12th and 13th overall picks.

The selection process will operate with each team having one pick in each of the 10 rounds. Teams will have up to two (2) minutes to make a selection in each round. No trades will be permitted during the draft and only players signed to an NBA Development League Standard Player Contract are eligible to be selected.

Chicago Bulls guard Andre Barrett was the first player selected in the 2005 D-League Draft. New Jersey Nets center Mikki Moore was the first pick in the 2002 D-League Draft. Moore and went on to earn D-League Defensive Player of the Year honors that season.

The D-League continues to develop talent from across all disciplines for the NBA's 30 teams and the entire NBA umbrella. In addition to the assignment of 29 players to D-League affiliates, there were also 18 GATORADE Call-Ups from the D-League to the NBA last season. Additionally, every referee hired by the NBA since 2002 has worked in the D-League, while coaches, athletic trainers and front office executives are also being developed.
