
2006 Mohawk Cord Phelps Promoted to Majors; Starting Today Vs Twins

2006 Amsterdam Mohawks alum Cord Phelps was promoted yesterday to the Cleveland Indians Major League roster. He is in the lineup today at second base as the Indians are playing the Minnesota Twins in an afternoon game.
Phelps played for the Mohawks in 2006 after his freshman season at Stanford. He was drafted in the third round of the 2008 draft by the Indians after leading the Cardinal to the College World Series. He hit .351 with 15 home runs that season at Stanford. He has had much success in professional baseball thus far as well and hit over .300 in 2010 combined between the AA and AAA levels. He then tore up the Arizona Fall League in the fall and then was the starting second baseman for Team USA in the Pan-Am games over the winter. He is a native of Stanford, CA. This season for AAA Columbus, he was hitting .303 with 7 homeruns and 15 doubles on the season. He has played all three infield positions as well.
The Mohawks open their 2011 season on Thursday June 9 against the Albany Dutchmen. They will have an opening weekend giant fireworks show after their second home game on Saturday June 11. This is the first of six fireworks shows the Mohawks have on tap for the season. Other shows will be June 24, July 1, July 3, July 15, and July 29.
