JOLIET, IL â The 2004 Joliet JackHammers established individual and team records in numerous hitting and fielding categories. At the beginning of September, the JackHammers completed their third season of existence with a 49-and-47 record.
The JackHammers set the Northern League's team fielding percentage season record at .981 (equates to just 71 errors in 3,651 total chances). John Lackaff set a league record for best fielding percentage by a third baseman with .970 (equates to just 6 errors in 200 total chances). The JackHammers set a league batting record with 55 sacrifice hits as a team, and Lackaff set the individual record with 18.
Five players re-established or tied 14 individual JackHammers records. Center fielder Jermaine Allensworth set the record in batting average (.321), doubles (26), runs scored (71), multiple run scoring games (20) and triples (4-tied). Second baseman Gabby Delgado tied the triples record with four. Left fielder Corey Paul set a record with 58 walks.
Outfielder/first baseman/catcher Josh Loggins set the JackHammers record for hits (116), home runs (20), RBI (76), at-bats (380), multiple RBI games (21), multiple hit games (33-tied) and triples (4-tied). Shortstop Dan Firlit set the team record for games played and shares the league record with 96.
The 2004 JackHammers, as a team, set new hitting standards in team history for the following 11 categories: batting average (.265), games played (96), at-bats (3,268), runs scored (472), hits (867), doubles (161), triples (17), home runs (88), RBI (427), walks (321) and sacrifice hits.
CONCRETE CHUNKS: If there were Northern League Gold Glove Awards, second baseman Gabby Delgado would have joined third baseman John Lackaff as the best at their positions. Delgado posted a league best .991 fielding percentage (4 errors in 430 total chances), and Lackaff ranked first at his position (details above). The JackHammers, as a team, ranked as the league's best in catching 37% of potential base stealers (34 of 92). Jeff Goldbach ranked 2nd in the league at 34% (catching 24 of 70), and Ben Fritz ranked 5th at 31% (4 of 13). RHP Ben Ally led JackHammers pitchers and was 4th in the league having caught 60% of base stealers (6 of 10).
