2001-2002 All-WCHL Rookie Team Announced

BOISE, Idaho - The West Coast Hockey League today announced the 2001-2002 All-WCHL Rookie team. WCHL head coaches and general managers, as well as members of the media, selected the team. Idaho Steelheads' goaltender Jason Cugnet, Colorado Gold Kings' defenseman Mike Garrow and Idaho forward Wes Dorey were unanimous selections. Idaho and Long Beach each have two representatives on the All-WCHL Rookie team.

Idaho's Jason Cugnet turned in an impressive debut by recording a 2.47 goals against average and a 10-4-2 win-loss record in his inaugural season. Cugnet's .909 save percentage is second best among WCHL goaltenders. Cugnet's teammate, Wes Dorey also earns All-WCHL Rookie honors after scoring 15 goals and 27 assists in 55 games with the Steelheads. Dorey has scored four game-winning goals and has earned a +15 plus/minus rating.

The Long Beach Ice Dogs place two forwards on the All-WCHL Rookie squad, Jeff Ewasko and Jeff Attard. Ewasko has appeared in 60 games this season, scoring eight goals and adding 23 assists. His 231 penalty minutes are second most on the team and most of any WCHL rookie. Attard scored 11 goals and added 19 assists in 47 games for the Ice Dogs. He netted two game-winning goals and logged a +15 plus/minus rating.

The All-WCHL Rookie defensemen are Colorado's Mike Garrow and Fresno's Alex Todd. Garrow has split time between Colorado and the AHL's Utah Grizzlies this season. He led rookie defensemen in scoring with 40 points in 53 games. Garrow's 14 goals are second most by a WCHL defenseman this season and his +18 plus/minus rating led the Gold Kings. Fresno's Alex Todd joins Garrow on the blue line after appearing in 62 games for the Falcons in his rookie campaign. Todd scored two goals and added five assists while logging 120 penalty minutes this season.
