#1 Ranked Mustangs Continue Streak

February 8, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mustangs (17-1) won their 16th straight game on their home court at Ford Arena in Beaumont, TX on Saturday night with a 122-99 victory over the Texas City Rangers (1-8).

With the victory the Mustangs establish the 3rd longest winning streak in ABA history. The Mustangs past the Vermont Frostheaves on the win streak list. The Frostheaves won 15 straight games last season on their way to Back to Back ABA Championships. The longest winning streak in ABA history is held by the Indiana Alley Cats, who won 26 straight games back in the 2001-02 season. The Utah Snowbears are second on the list with 21 straight wins back in the 2004-05 season.

On Saturday night the Mustangs wasted no time taking complete control of the game vs the Rangers of Texas City. DeRon Rutledge scored 12 first quarter points and pulled 6 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a 30-11 lead at the end of the first quarter of play.

The Mustangs led 66-35 at the end of the first half!

In the second half the Rangers found their range and shot the basketball well from 3 point land. The Mustangs rested their top players and played most of their young players in the second half. The Mustangs did just enough to maintain the lead they established in the first half and went on to win their 17th game on the season.

Southeast Texas was led in scoring by Rutledge, who finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Boo Richardson followed up with 12 points and dished out 6 assist. Jamaal Davis continued his stellar play of late by chipping in 10 points and Alex Sanders finished with 10 points respectively. Veteran point guard Tim Pledger also dished out 15 assist on the night! Texas City was led by Silvester Simple's 26 points and by Courtney Captain with 25 points.

The Mustangs and Rangers get back together again on Monday night at Ford Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
