09' Northern League All-Star Game Ends in Tie

JOLIET, IL-The 2009 Northern League Field of All-Stars Game presented by Farmers Insurance ended in a 5-5 tie between the Great Plains (Kansas City, Fargo-Moorhead and Winnipeg) and Great Lakes All-Stars (Joliet, Schaumburg, and Gary) after 10 innings before 3,146 people at Silver Cross Field.

The Great Plains All-Stars scored two runs in the 1st inning against Great Lakes RHP Rory Shortell (Joliet). 1B Damian Rolls (Kansas City) worked a walk and went to third base on a single by CF Nic Jackson (Fargo-Moorhead). DH Juan Diaz (Winnipeg) singled home Rolls for a 1-0 Great Plains lead.

Jackson stole second base and advanced to third base on Diaz's single. The Fargo-Moorhead CF scored on a past ball for a 2-0 Great Plains team.

The Great Lakes All-Stars scored a single run in the 1st inning against Great Plains LHP Luis Villarreal. SS Kevin Rios (Joliet) hit a single and stole second base. DH Felix Jose (Schaumburg) hit an RBI single to score Rios for a 2-1 Great Plains lead.

The Great Plains team scored two runs in the 6th inning to take a 4-1 lead. Diaz singled and went to second base on a walk issued to RF Ryan Fox (Kansas City). After LF Dee Brown (Winnipeg), struck out, 2B Josh Asanovich (Winnipeg) hit a single to load the bases.

3B Mark Minicozzi (Kansas City) singled in Diaz. Fox scored on an error after the play to make it 4-1.

The Great Lakes All-Stars came back in a big way in the 6th inning with four runs of their own. SS Jay Pecci (Gary) singled and went to second base on a single by 3B Andrew Pinckney (Joliet). PH Jeff Dunbar (Schaumburg) walked to load the bases. RF Victor Ferrante (Schaumburg) hit a sacrifice fly to plate Pecci for a 4-2 score.

1B Freddie Thon (Joliet) hit a two-run double to score both Pinkney and Dunbar and tie the game at 4-4.

2B Jose Valdez (Schaumburg) singled home Thon to give the Great Lakes All-Stars a 5-4 lead.

The Great Plains All-Stars scored a single run in the 9th inning on an RBI single by Diaz. Jackson, who reached first base on a two-out walk issued by Great Lakes RHP Drew Shetrone, came all the way around to score from first base.

After the two clubs battled to a stand-still using position players as pitchers in the 10th inning (Great Lakes: Jeff Dunbar) and (Great Plains: Greg Jacobs), the managers, umpires and league personnel met briefly. They decided to declare the game a tie.

Loose Gravel: Thon was named MVP of the game, going 2-5 with two RBI. Winnipeg RHP Bear Bay was named "Pitcher of the Game," by tossing two scoreless innings over the fourth and fifth innings. He allowed just two hits and faced eight batters.
