Sharks Owner/Head Coach Not Worried Heading Into Training Camp

February 22, 2005 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Carolina Ghostriders News Release

Theron Davis, owner and head coach of the Atlantic Indoor Football League's Carolina Sharks, says he has no worries or concerns as to what his Sharks will do when they take the field in April.

The Sharks will be gearing up for their first game in the AIFL's inaugural season when they face the Richmond Bandits in Richmond, VA April 16.

With only a few weeks before training camp begins in March, Coach Davis says he is prepared to go into camp with plenty of energy but a sense of urgency.

The teams will have only training camp and no preseason scrimmages to further help the Sharks coaching staff evaluate over 40 players reporting to camp.

"We are in a bit of a jam as far as time is concerned, but I think we have a pretty good idea of the players that we plan on building this club around," said Davis.

One of the team's main casting members is quarterback Ralph Truitt, a 6'3", 245-pound southpaw from Michigan State.

Truitt will be competing for the starting job with Travis Pender, a former Greensboro Prowlers (arenafootball2) player and one of the team's all-time leading passers.

To make the deal a little sweeter, Coach Davis added a ton of speed to his wide receiver and special teams corps.

"We have about five or six guys that are in the 4.3 (40-yard dash time) range or faster and know exactly what to do when the ball touches their hands," said Davis. "They are all talented athletes."

One of the Sharks' speed merchants is a local Charlotte player, Demeco Archangel.

Archangel, like Pender, is also a former Prowler and has set his fair share of af2 records for the number of kick return touchdowns in a game and average yards per touchdown catch.

"Demeco will definitely bring some exciting game-breaking type speed for the fans to see," Davis said. "He's like a ball of energy that is able to get his teammates to feed off of his energy in a game. He will be a big part of our offense."

The Sharks will begin training camp March 29 and will have to cut down from 40 to 24 players in less than two weeks before their first game. But, with all the talent the Sharks have acquired, the only hard part will be having to cut down to 18 active players with a six-man practice squad.

The Sharks' last chance to look at Charlotte and other local area talent will be February 27th at 8:30 a.m. at the Sports Warehouse, located at 10930 Granite Street in Charlotte.
