Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - The Potomac Nationals clinched the first half title in the Northern Division of the Carolina League with a 5-3 win over the Winston-Salem Warthogs on Monday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Nationals bullpen was stellar as John Wilkie and Adam Carr combined to work four hitless innings of relief in preserving the victory for Potomac, who becomes the first Washington Nationals minor league affiliate to clinch a postseason berth.

The Warthogs took advantage of a shaky Ross Detwiler in the first inning as Greg Paiml singled and scored on an RBI double by Javier Colina to give Winston-Salem an early lead. After C.J. Retherford walked, Detwiler uncorked a wild pitch that scored Colina from third to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 advantage.

Potomac wasted little time in responding as the Nationals knotted the game at two in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Martinez drew a four-pitch walk from Cleveland Santeliz, who was making his 2008 debut with Winston-Salem after being called down from Double-A Birmingham. A ground out and two wild pitches scored Martinez with Potomac's first run. Later in the inning, Chris Marrero plated Matt Rogelstad with a two-out single to tie the game.

Potomac added two unearned runs in the second inning against Santeliz to take a 4-2 lead. Both teams scored a run in the third inning as Winston-Salem collected an RBI sacrifice fly from Lee Cruz and Leonard Davis greeted Warthogs reliever Matt Zaleski with a solo home run to give the Nationals a 5-3 lead.

Detwiler (5-3) battled thru five innings and allowed three runs on four hits with four walks, but earned the win. Wilkie worked three scoreless innings with four strikeouts and Carr retired the side in order in the ninth to collect his seventh save of the season.

Santeliz (0-1) only lasted two innings and allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks to suffer the loss.

The middle game of this three-game series is scheduled for Tuesday night at Pfitzner Stadium with a 7:05 first pitch. The Warthogs will turn to RHP Anthony Carter (0-1, 7.20), while the Nationals are expected to start RHP Jeff Mandel (1-0, 3.60).
