Charlotte Knights News Release
Steve Smith Sr. Named as Home Run Derby Captain Five-Time Pro-Bowler to Represent Steve Smith Family Foundation (UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Steve Smith Sr., a five-time NFL Pro Bowler, is the eighth and final celebrity captain named for the 2016 Harris Teeter and Tide+ Triple-A Baseball Home Run Derby presented by Clariant. The event, which kicks off the three-day All-Star celebration at BB&T Ballpark, takes center stage in Uptown Charlotte on Monday, July 11th. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. on July 11th and Smith Sr. will sign pre-event autographs down on the field along with the seven other celebrity captains.
In all, a total of eight sluggers will compete for the 2016 Triple-A Home Run Derby championship belt. Smith Sr. was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft out of the University of Utah. The Los Angeles, CA native spent 13 seasons in Charlotte and is the all-time team leader in total touchdowns, receptions, and receiving yards. In 2011, Smith Sr. became the 35th player in NFL history to amass 10,000 receiving yards. The 37-year-old wide receiver, who is currently a member of the Baltimore Ravens, will represent the Steve Smith Family Foundation, which champions the cause of the voiceless and fearful, envisioning an end to domestic violence and a better quality of life for all.
