MOYA SAVES SECOND STRAIGHT IN BILOXI FINALE
Queliz homers; Pineyro allows one run over 6.2 innings
Biloxi, Miss. - With a home run from catcher Jose Queliz and a second consecutive save from reliever Gabriel Moya, the Jackson Generals took their fourth game in five tries at Biloxi, winning 6-5 on Wednesday.
Queliz, activated on Tuesday from the disabled list, went 1-for-3 in his debut at Double-A, helping Jackson (13-6) weather a ninth-inning rally to win the series finale. Queliz's teammates add a foursome of runs over the course of the next five innings, taking a 6-1 advantage into the ninth inning.
After Miller Diaz threw an inning and a third of scoreless relief for starter Ivan Pineyro, the Shuckers made things interesting in their last at-bat. Aided by a close call on a potential double play and an error on a ground ball, four Biloxi runners scored on Yuhei Nakaushiro in the ninth inning with only one out. Moya (S, 3), fresh off his second save of the year on Tuesday, entered and finished the inning by provoking a pop-out to second base and a brow-wiping strikeout.
Pineyro, a minor league veteran pitching at Double-A for the first time in 2017, teamed with catcher Queliz for the first time and got great results. Over six and two thirds innings at MGM Park, Pineyro struck out six Shuckers without walking anyone. Pineyro (1-0, 0.00 ERA) allowed five hits to Biloxi (7-13), conceding one unearned run in his longest Double-A start since July 2015.
After Queliz's third-inning drive, the Generals added another pair of runs on a two-out Kelly Dugan blast in the sixth. Dugan went deep for the third time in the series, raising his batting average to .256. Colin Walsh's team-lead-tying fourth homer tacked on a fifth Generals run in the eighth inning, and an RBI single by Jamie Westbrook four batters later completed the scoring for Jackson.
The opening innings played out similarly to yesterday's 1-0 shutout, as scoring was scarce on both sides. The Generals left the bases loaded in the top of the first with two outs, but a groundout to third denied any payoff. Pineyro retired the two of the first three Biloxi batters, but a wind-blown sky-scraping popup from Biloxi's Art Charles cost the Generals. The ball eluded a trio of Generals fielders in shallow right field, and the Shuckers went ahead, 1-0. It was the first run and lead for Biloxi since Sunday.
Jackson once again loaded the bases in the second inning, but a fielder's choice forced out Dawel Lugo at second base, again denying the visitors. Pineyro sat down three Biloxi hitters in a row in the bottom half, his first of three consecutive three-batter innings.
In the third, outfielder Evan Marzilli laid down a two-out bunt to the third base side, hustling down the line for a hit. Queliz, who hit just five home runs in 204 at-bats last year, launched a pitch from Angel Ventura (0-2, 3.00 ERA) into the trees beyond the left field wall, putting the Generals ahead by one.
The Generals finished the game with 15 hits, getting multi-hit games from Dugan, Westbrook, Marzilli, Kevin Cron and Dawel Lugo. The Generals picked up the victory in spite of leaving a season-high 15 men on base. Jackson is 6-4 in one-run games.
