Raleigh Rebels News Release

AUGUSTA, GA (June 10, 2006)-The Raleigh Rebels (8-6) were defeated by the Augusta Spartans (5-9), 48-40, in a suspenseful overtime game Saturday night at the Augusta Civic Center. In a game that contained six lead changes, the Rebels seemed to pull away as they led by eight points with 1:37 left in the contest. The Spartans, however, did not quit, as they completed a "jump ball' in the back of the endzone as time expired and successfully completed the two-point conversion to send the game into overtime. In overtime, each team was stopped on its first possession, but the Spartans scored on their second possession with 15 seconds remaining in the five-minute overtime period. The Rebels managed to get the ball to the Spartans' 1-yard line with seven seconds remaining, but a fumble on the subsequent play and a Spartans' recovery ended the game.

"We made a lot of plays throughout the game, but we just didn't finish," Coach Steven G. Folmar said after the game. "We need to forget about this game and focus on our playoff run. We are going to have to do all of the little things right to keep this season going," Folmar said.

Notables for the Rebels against Augusta were receivers Sammy Henderson and Lavel Bailey who each recorded six catches and two touchdowns. Charles Washington had 10 carries for 22 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback David Malino was 17 for 32 for 230 yards and five touchdowns. The defense was anchored by linebacker Cotra Jackson, who made 11 tackles, and defensive back Rashaud Palmer, who led the secondary with 10 tackles.

The Rebels will face the defending AIFL champion Richmond Bandits in the first round of the playoffs. The game will be played in Richmond on Monday, June 19th.
