Playoff Push Begins With Win

Renegades Top ValleyCats in Game One of Seven Game Home Stand

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - The Hudson Valley Renegades overcame an early two-run deficit by scoring four runs in their half of the first en route to a 5-2 win over the Tri-City ValleyCats Monday night at Dutchess Stadium.

Tri-City started the scoring in the first. With one out, designated hitter Gabriel Bracamonte was hit with a pitch then moved to second on a bloop single to center by shortstop Jonathan Arauz. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, before third baseman Adrian Tovalin lifted a sac fly to center. Bracamonte scored on the play and Tri-City had a 1-0 lead as Arauz moved to third. Catcher Michael Papierski followed that with a looping single into left-centerfield to bring in Arauz and up the ValleyCats lead to 2-0.

However, the Renegades came storming back with four runs against wild pitching in the bottom of the first. ValleyCats starter Carlos Hiraldo struggled mightily, walking Hudson Valley second baseman Vidal Brujan on four pitches to start the inning. Centerfielder Carl Chester followed with an infield single to short before one of three wild pitches in the inning by Hiraldo moved Brujan and Chester to second and third respectively. Designated hitter Brendan McKay drew a walk to load the bases, then catcher Zac Law grounded an opposite field single into right to move everyone up a base and make the score 2-1. Leftfielder Oscar Rojas came up next, and hit what appeared to be a routine double play ball to short. However, Arauz bobbled the ball and could only get one out at second. Chester scored on the play and the game was tied at two.

After a strikeout of rightfielder Angel Perez, another wild pitch moved Rojas to second. With Rojas at second and McKay at third with two out, shortstop Deion Tansel lofted a soft single into left-centerfield to score both runners and give the Renegades at 4-2 lead.

Hudson Valley added to their lead in the third. Law started the inning by reaching on a fielding error by Tovalin, Rojas followed with a single to left-center to move Law to second. Perez came up next and flew out to deep rightfield, however both runners tagged up and advanced a base to moved runners to second and third. With the infield in, Tansel grounded a ball to short, however Arauz kicked the ball for another error. Law scored on the play, Tansel was given his third RBI of the game, and the Renegades had a 5-2 lead.

Tri-City threatened to get back in the game in the eighth. Renegades relief pitcher Matt Vogel hit a batter and walked two others to load the bases with one out. He was replaced by closer Zack Mozingo who proceeded to strike out centerfielder Jacob Meyers swinging and leftfielder Andy Pineda looking to end the inning and preserve the three-run lead.

The ValleyCats made one last charge in the ninth. With two out and nobody on base, Arauz kept the game alive with a soft, line drive single to left. He went to second on a catcher ' s indifference, then scored on a groundball double down the rightfield line by Tovalin to pull Tri-City to within two.

Papierski then strode to the plate as the tying run, however Mozingo got him to strike out looking to end the game.

After that difficult first inning, Hudson Valley starting pitcher Resly Linares retired 14 of the last 18 hitters he faced. Linares (3-3) got the win by allowing two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. He also walked two and struck out six. The loss went to Hiraldo (1-6) who allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits over four innings. The lefty also walked three and struck out two. Mozingo (9) got the save as he struck out four while allowing a run on two hits in 1.2 innings.

The Renegades got six hits in the game, but no one with more than one. Tansel had three RBI to lead the Hudson Valley attack. They were outhit by the ValleyCats, who had seven basehits. Leading the way was Arauz who went 2-5 with two singles and two runs scored. Tovalin ended the game with two RBI.

Hudson Valley and Tri-City continue their series with a twi-night doubleheader tomorrow. First-pitch will be at 5:35 and both games will be seven innings long. In game one, right-hander Austin Franklin (3-2, 2.47 ERA) will toe the bump for the Renegades against fellow righty Tyler Ivey (0-3, 7.52 ERA). The Renegades have not announced their starter for game two, however ValleyCats will start right-hander Leovanny Rodriguez (1-0, 3.68 ERA) in the second game.
