The Peoria Pirates set sail with a new captain Saturday night and entered unchartered waters with victory at home in front of the loudest 2500 fans in arena football. The Pirates (2-6) scored first and never trailed as they defeated the Quad Cities Steamwheelers (4-4) 65-48 in Mike Hohensee's debut as Peoria's head coach.
Luke Drone passed for 236 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for three more TD's to lead the victorious Pirates. Quad Cities QB J.J. Raterink also threw for five scores and 303 yards for the visitors.
Jesse Schmidt caught 18 passes for 193 yards to lead all receivers and Kris Peters caught nine passes for 107 yards for the Steamwheelers. Peoria receivers were led by Kevin Sanford, who had seven receptions and 112 yards while Moses Harris added six catches for 52 yards.
Defensively, Michael Phillips had a great night with ten tackles for the Pirates. His teammate, John Jackson, added six tackles. Josh Ferguson came down with two interceptions and Jacob Schoonover also had a key pick to stop a drive late in the game for Peoria. William Stokes capped the night for the Pirates with a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown to seal the game for the home team. Quad Cities was led defensively by Demarcus Johnson, 5 ½ tackles, and Prentis Stokes, 4 tackles and a sack.
