Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

DAVENPORT, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels were eliminated from the Western Division First-Half playoff race Saturday as the Quad Cities River Bandits picked up a 3-2 win. Due to Cedar Rapids' loss at Modern Woodmen Park, the Peoria Chiefs and Clinton LumberKings will earn the division's first-half playoff berths.

Quad Cities (30-38) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Myles Straw led off with a double and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Osvaldo Duarte. Two batters later, Pat Porter hit an RBI single that brought in Straw.

In the bottom of the fifth, the River Bandits pushed their lead to 2-0. Marlon Avea collected a leadoff single and would score from third base during a sacrifice fly from Kristian Trompiz.

Cedar Rapids (36-32) responded by rallying to tie the contest. A force out off the bat of J.J. Fernandez brought in Sean Miller in the sixth inning. Miller scored the tying run in the eighth on a two-out error to even the score, 2-2.

Conner Goedert drove in the decisive run in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Goedert hit a sacrifcie fly that scored Osvaldo Duarte to give Quad Cities its winning margin of 3-2. Kernels center fielder LaMonte Wade followed with a diving catch that kept two more runs from scoring, but Cedar Rapids was held scoreless in the ninth inning and lost.

River Bandits reliever David Schmidt claimed the victory. After a blown save opportunity in the eighth inning, Schmidt retired the side in the ninth and improved to 2-0 with the win. Kernels reliever Cam Booser fell to 0-2 with the loss, giving up the game-winning run on Goedert's sacrifice fly.

Starting pitchers Albert Abreu and Dereck Rodriguez each recorded quality starts for Quad Cities and Cedar Rapids respectively. Abreu tossed a personal-high seven innings while allowing just one run. Rodriguez fired a season-best eight strikeouts over six innings, conceding only two runs - one earned.

The finale of this four-game series is set for 1:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Probable pitchers for Sunday's contest are Kernels southpaw Sam Clay (4-3, 2.64 ERA) and River Bandits right-hander Justin Ferrell (2-3, 5.14 ERA).
