Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners fell behind in the first inning, but in a pitcher's duel deluxe at Bosse Field in Evansville, they tied the score in the fifth and surged ahead with four runs in the tenth inning to beat the Evansville Otters 5-1 on Friday night, taking the series opener and extending their lead over the Otters in the West Division to eight and a half games.

The matchup on the mound lived up to its billing, as Preston Olson and JARETT MILLER matched each other nearly pitch-for-pitch, with both players lasting into the eighth inning and striking out eight with just one walk each. Evansville got to Miller first, in the first inning, when Rolando Gomez laid down a bunt single, advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by Miller on a pickoff throw and then scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead before a single out was recorded in the inning.

But that would be the only run that Evansville would score all night, as Miller was masterful, pitching a season-high seven and one-third innings, and retiring fifteen out of sixteen batters between the third and eighth innings to keep the Otters at bay. The Miners would get the game even in the fifth inning, as WILLI MARTIN led off with a walk.

Two batters later, FRANCISCO ROSARIO was hit by a pitch and AARON GATES hit into a fielder's choice before SHANE KENNEDY lined a clutch single into center field, bringing Martin home and tying the game.

Neither team would score until the top of the tenth, with Evansville stranding the bases loaded against EVAN MOTT after Miller departed in the eighth inning and leaving the potential winning run on second in the ninth against CHRIS DEBOO (1-1). In the tenth, BRANDON CUMMINS and Rosario both walked against Ken Frosch (4-3). Gates then pulled back a bunt and slapped a grounder to Evansville second baseman Josh Allen, who booted the ball for an error to load the bases. Kennedy then came up clutch again, driving in the go-ahead runs with a two-run single up the middle for a 3-1 Miners lead. NOLAN EARLEY would follow three batters later with insurance in the form of a two-out, two-run double to complete the scoring, as the Otters went scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

The Miners will go for a series win on Saturday night at Bosse Field at 6:35 p.m., with DYLLON NUERNBERG pitching against the Otters' Tyler Vail.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
