Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club would like to congratulate defenceman Jake Bean and forward Beck Malenstyn on being selected to Team Canada's 23 player pre-competition roster for the 2016 IIHF World Under-18 Championship, April 14-24 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
Both players helped lead Canada to gold last August at the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.
"This is a great opportunity for Jake and Beck to play with and against the top players in the world for their age group," said Mike Moore, Hitmen General Manager and Vice President of Business Operations. "On behalf of the entire organization and our fan base, we wish them and Team Canada all the best as they begin their pursuit of a gold medal."
Bean just completed his sophomore season, setting a franchise single-season record for most goals by a defenceman with 24. He captured a trio of Hitmen player awards in 2015-16; the Edward Jones 3 Star Selection Award and co-winner of both the Tommy Gun's Original Barbershop Top Defenceman Award and Calgary Hitmen Booster Club Fan Favourite Award. Bean is also the Eastern Conference nominee for the WHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player.
Malenstyn is coming off his second full season with the Hitmen where he finished tied for second in team playoff scoring with three points (2g, 1a) in five games. The power forward excelled off the ice as well, receiving the team's Chrysler Canada Inc. Scholastic Player Award.
Canada will play a pair of pre-tournament games in Winnipeg, facing the Czech Republic on April 10 before taking on Sweden on April 12.
